The dealer's hand shook slightly as he pointed it out to me. 1 found that in a farmhouse, a Pennsyl vanie Dutch farmhouse, in northern California. And I sold it to this smart Texas dealer for a song $35. Now, here it is, making the cover of Antiques and he claims he found it!" I complimented him upon the obvious: "But you did spot it first and he found it in your shop." "And played me for a sucker!" It was small consolation. And you know, Gage, I broke a tooth on it Matter of fact, that's how I found it." At my look, he went on. BEWARE Of FAKE IMS TVi T.fherte- HeaI nlrkel he. gan life as an unnamed found ling, wound up in 1913, 30 years later, aa a val uable fraud, and today it is being copied by cheats so, if you run into a 1913 Liberty Head nickel, beware. Al- though, frank ly. the fraudulent copy of thia fraud, if well executed, will bring a good price. This 1913 coin, which the mint aays was never made and of which there is no record, is not considered legal issue. But there It is and 5 or S of the coina are known to be extant. Maybe more, but if so, they are still in hiding. This fraudulent coin may be the most widely advertised fake la the world; one man alone. Max Mehl of Fort Worth, Tex, told me that this coin has been featured in more than one mil lion dollars worth of his adver tising! In addition, look in al most any coin dealer'a ad, and there you'll see among coins wanted: 1913 Liberty Head nicker. . . $1,500! (Actually, it is worth more than double that amount). But to go back- When this Liberty Head nickel was first minted in 1883, the designer failed to include the word CENTS, merely a large letter V. These "centless coins of which - there were almost SVi million issued before this glaring omis sion, was corrected the same year? were gold-plated by un scrupulous persons and passed as $5 gold pieces. Several nations have erected made-to-order cities for their capitals. Notable examples in clude New Delhi, India; Canber ra, Australia, and Washington, D. C. - r"A these people offered me soma of their hard-like-rock Christmas cookies. They call them Marzi pan, or something. And when I bit on one, my tooth broke. But after I got through feeling sorry for myself. Hooked at the design of the cookies male and female In dians, and I knew right off, that here waa something pretty spec ial. So after I broke my tooth on. thl hard cookie, the lady was sort of apologetic and then she showed me the board ... it was mahogany mahogany doesn't sliver, as you may know, Gage. And it was beautifully worn, about 18 inches by 14 in size, I would say. I turned it over, and there was the date, 1790, with the New York firm and the ini tials of the maker. To make a long story short, I paid $25 for the board and I knew they thought I was crazy. And I took it to my shop. At first, I had a $50 price on it to help pay for that chipped tooth. But that was pretty ridiculous and when it didn't move in 6 months I brought it down to $40. And then this smart joker from Texas walks in. "Like most Texans he gave me a long spiel and I figured he was a Johnny-come-lately. So when he offered me $35 for it, I took it, thinking he was going to pick up some more items. But what does he do, but walk out on me . . . aftertelling me that he was going to use it over his mantle- piece. "Well, maybe ha did. But you notice, it's here on Antique, made the cover, too. If it's worth a cent, it's worth $250. And that doesn't include the price of my chipped tooth, either." The publisher, seeing the point, returned calmly to his presses and the poet set about composing another masterpiece. Whether or not you happen to agree that Longfellow was a great poet, don't let it affect your judgment regarding the present value of his works dollarwise. Hiawatha is by no means the most valuable of his writings. Good copies of the first edition there are 4 variants, by the way have so far generally brought around $50. If you have a copy, check it to see if it was printed in Boston, 1855. On page 279, line 5 from the bottoi. if the word one has the n in it, you probably have one of the earliest copies. If the advertise ments are dated November, 1855, you almost certainly have. And if you happen to have a copy with October, 1855, adver tisements, guard it with your life The reason is that you will then almost certainly break all prev ious records in prices for 'this item. LIBERTY HEAD NICKELS In the succeeding 29 years, more than 500 million of these Liberty Head nickels wcr mint. ed, but more famous than all these, were the fraudulent pieces turned out the year after, the issue ceased. x Just how they were struck re mains an unsolved mystery. Maybe it was by an. employe who should have been Out eating his lunch; maybe someone stay ed in the mint overnight and minted them behind locked doors In stealth; maybe the dies were "borrowed. One man who must have known that secret was the fabu lously wealthy Cot E. H. R. Green, late son of the late multi millionairess Hetty Green. He reputedly paid $50 for each of these coins. A pittance. It is official record that Burdette G.- Johnson of St Louis, known aa a "dealer's dealer" resold 5 of these 3 proofs t $900 each and 2 uncirculated ones, at $800 each. The last one to be re-re-sold at auction was purchased by J. V. McDermott of Milwaukee, for .$3,750. How ever, another was 'purchased at a private auction and is insured for $5,000. Rumor persists that one or two of these nickels may have entered the fat ex-King Farouk'a great collection which waa seized by the Egyptian gov ernment. Compounding the fraud, there are many illegal copies of the original fraud. Some of. these were originally 1903 or 1910 is sues with the numbers changed. One of those which I saw was well executed and purchased by a sharp-eyed dealer for $30. So, even a double-crossed fraud can be valuable.
