J., says the greatest advantage of his "automatic pilot- to in dustry ia that "one onerator can control mose than one lathe at a time and turn out a greater vol ume of work." Gould developed the device as Dart of his work for a master of science degree in industrial en gineering at the University of Mississippi here. General Electric Corporation was so impressed with Gould's device that he was sisned to enter GE's manufacturlns' train. ing program, despite the fact he must take a three-year tour of duty in the Navy after finishins school. Gould cot the idea for his elec tronic pilot from a hvdraulicallv- driven lathe in an engineering? magazine- A professor suggested mat he use electronics, and five months later. Gould had com pleted his pilot model. The electronic control is more efficient than the hydraulic con trol, Gould said, and costs less to DUUd. Gould said his nilot could easily be turned out in a small shop for less than $100, while nyorauuc controls cannot be made in the ordinary shop. "I put in the material to be shaped, set the conditions, and the electronic control does the rest while I take it eav." Gould said. He said hydraulic controls require more attention from the operator. Gould said his electronic nilot could be used on, drill presses, milling machines and lathes. August 9, about to push Into the chucker the six pounds of propaganda that reached my desk that day, I spotted one bundle that looked personal. It had 42 cents postage and typed in the corner was the name w. P. Maloney and a New York address. Why. I wondered, should Mr. Maloney spend four bits to send me something? In the accompanying letter, headed Public Relations, Mr. Ma loney informs me that "one of the largest if not the largest manufacturer of baby bora ted powders has put in a rush order for new baby powder cans with out boric acid or bora ted on the label, which means that boric acid has been removed from the product" One enclosure is a reprint of a bulletin , of the N. Y. City health department stating that several cases of boric acid poi soning have been reported and that the therapeutic value of boric acid is questionable. Since there are" more efficacious and safer agents available, physi cians in the child health stations are requested not to recommend the use of boric acid dressings on diaper rashes or other skin surfaces. Three other enclosures are : prints of reports published in various medical journals de scribing fatal cases of boric acid M00-O-0S and MUSINGS Civilization has reach ed its peak oyer on West Fourth where me peo ple have trained their ca to answer the phone.
