Saturday Meeting The wives and husbands of members will hold a meeting of the Al-A non family group In the First Methodist church at 2 p.m. Saturday All families of alcoholics wishing to further their understanding of alcohol ism are. also invited. This group haa been formed for the purpose of helping families of alcoholics to understand the alcoholic in the home and to better their own lives by living the AA program. AA members in southern Ore gon have asked that anyone in' terested in this problem for any reason should attend any or all of the above mentioned meet ings. Fellowship Group The organization Is a fellow ship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other in order to solve their common problem and help others recover. from alcoholism. - ' AA began in 1934 and has grown to a membership of over 150,000 recovered alcoholics', which is by far the greatest de gree of success ever achieved in the history of treating the "baffling disease of alcoholism." In 1948. an AA group was formed in MedfoM. This was fol- Thornton Upholds Wasco DA in Case Involving Salmon Salem (U.R) The Oregon At torney General Robert Y. Thorn ton said Saturday that Wasco County District Attorney Donald E. Heisler had his support in bringing charges against a Yaki ma, Wash., white man in connec tion with Indian-caught salmon at Celilo Falls Indian village. Conducting Study Thornton said his office was conducting a continuing study of the problem of Celilo fish finding its way into commercial markets during closed season. He said he agreed withHeisler's charge of illegal possession of salmon during closed season brought Friday against Myrl A. Rowley, Yakima, a white man. Rowley pleaded innocent of the charge in The Dalles justice court and the case was continued for trial. The charges grew out of an attempted seizure by state police of some 30 tons of iced salmon which Indian fishermen said Rowley was storing for them in cold storage lockers. ExecullTO Decision Regarding surrender of the fish back to the Indians follow ing a near riot at the fishing village Thursday night, Thorn ton said that was an "executive decision" reached by the gov ernor's office. State Senate President Eugene Marsh of Mc Minnville was serving as chief executive during the absence of Gov. Paul Patterson. lowed by groups in Grants Pass and Klamath Falls within, a few months. AA members report that there are local people who at tended these first .meetings in southern Oregon and who have remained sober over since. Anonymity Preserved The group's' principle of an onymity la strictly adhered to. AA' can be easily contacted by anyone having a sincere desire to stop drinking by Information in we ciassmea overusing sec tion, of this -newspaper. The only requirement for membership is the honest desire to stop drinking. No dues or fees are charged, and AA is not al lied, with any sect, denomina tion," politics, organization or institution. The primary pur pose is to stay sober and help other, alcoholics to achieve so briety. New Concept The coa eept ' that alcoholism is a disease is new to most alco holics. For ages alcoholism . has been -looked upon as a moral issue: sinfuL lack of will power and a display of weakness, mem bers state. When the alcoholic is made to realize that medical science has proven that alcohol? Ism' is a baffling and cunning disease, he' has overcome a big stumbling block on the road to soberness, they say. 'The disease of alcoholism is two-fold: the body of the alco holic is physically , allergic to alcohol, and the mind of the alcoholic is : obsessed ' with the idea that by some miracle he will be able to drink .again and control it, AA members point out There Is no known cure for alcoholism. Members of AA are not cured, but their "disease is arrested as in the case of tuber cular patients. Their bodies are still allergic to alcohol in any form.
