HUGH PRUETT Pacific actional Director ; American Meteor Society :.The request lor counts of the Perseid meteor display of a month ago brought replies from observers all the way from South-Dakota to Oregon. The observers were asked to make hourly counts during the nights of August 10 to 13 and were advised that the morning hours at the middle dates would likely give the best results. Among the many who ob served were the veteran count ers Mrs. Arthur, Goold of Tripp, S. D., the Misses Eleanor and Isabel Sandmeyer of Buhl, Ida., Miss Alice Jensen of Silverton, Ore., and Ben Bones of Grants Pass, Ore. The Sandmeyer sis ters started as early as August 5 and continued until August 14. Mr. Bones, a gladiolus grower, repeated his past performance of observing from the west rims of Crater Lake at an elevation of 7000 feet. Pleased With Results ' All seemed pleased with the results they obtained. The best counts were sent by the veter ans of many years, who knew well how to arrange their ob serving stations so there would be as little interference as pos sible. These felt the display was better than on most years. Even the experts cannot tell wnen the maximum number of meteors will appear. It is us ually said that at the maximum 50 or 60 may be seen per hour by experienced counters with good eyesight. This year the hourly counts built up gradually until 2:30 a.m. of August 12. During the next IVi hours, the flecks of light were streaking the sky at the rate of around 90 per hour. It seemed to be getting better up to the time dawn began ti dim the celestial fireworks. , Miss Eleanor Sandmeyer wrote: I can truly say that at the Perseid maximum there was the heaviest meteor fall since the showef (Draconids) of Oct. 9, 1946. It was simply wonderful and. pleasantly surprising since the previous night's meteors were rather few in comparison. The counts did not lead up grad ually to a climax as they did some years ago. There was an abrupt or sudden rise on the 12th. From about 4.05 a.m. and on the meteors were thick. I saw four fall at one time. There were some doubtful ones I didn't count. Pair Bound Over On Forgery Charge Donald Keith Simonsen, 22, Ruch and a Medford boy, 17, were , bound over to the grand jury from district cour Thurs day on a charge of forgery. The youths are charged with using an oil company credit card Sept. 3 to obtain two new tires. They returned the tires the next day after the transaction when Simonsen said - his conscience On TKO Si(dO V E.V.Durling Counting Conditions Excellent Miss - Jensen wrote: - "Condi tions were generally excellent for counting. On August 11 many meteors were very short with little or no spray; the next night, perhaps half had some spray and were longer. It seem ed to me the meteors declined more rapidly than usual this year after the maximum was reached." v ' The Perseid meteors are the debris from Turtle's comet and travel in the cometary orbit. Once a year the earth encounters this stream. The particles travel ing 36 miles per second are heated by friction to incandes cence when they enter the upper air and are almost immediately burned to ash. I believe- left-handed people should organize with a view to making their lives easier. Since I mentioned some difficulties from which south paws suffer, I ' have heard of many ' more- One left-handed young woman said she was turned down lor a job as a telephone operator because all the long distance operating equipment was designed for right-handers. Another said she was tired of having to switcn her coffee from her right hand to her left hand side when served in a restaurant Still another southpaw said she was not only left-handed but left-footed. Tnai made driving an automobile difficult Also, the number of things made for right-handers but not for left-handers is truly fmazing. Waitresses Owing to the many different classes of restaurants in New York City, it is impossible to cite the "average wages plus tips" of a big town waitress. A young woman employed in a top-flight chain of New York restaurants informs me her sal ary is $18.55 for a five day week. Her tips average from $5 to $6 a day- So she earns from S43 to $48 aweek. It is interesting to note" that of these earnings, the restaurant pays the girl $3.71 a day, while the customers, through the medium of tips, pay her $5 to $6 a day. The most brilliantly written book so far dealing with the lives and loves of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor is "Gone with, the Windsors" by Ties Brody. In this, Mr. Brody makes the following observation, "It is both sad and amusing to see a 'former king of mighty Eng land reduced by the woman he loved to a 'little man,' to the rank of a meek, husband. What should one do, laugh or cry when one looks a the man who was Edward the Eighth? The ex- Caesar in the role of handbag carrying, cavaliere - servente, a sort of ornament, a woman's back-ground, is a melacholy sight." Bad Parts One good part can make an actor. How many bad parts does it take to break him? One of the worst parts I ever saw a talented actor struggle with was that assigned William Demarest in his recent bow in a TV series That was really brutaL A few more parts like that and De marest will be on the road to oblivion. Then I saw Brian Don- levy in a TV play titled "First Vice President." His part was unbelievably bad. I like Brian. He is one of my favorite actors and a nice fellow personally. I hate to think he may be in need of money. I can't see any other reason for his consenting to take such a ridiculous part Of course, some very fine actors don t know & good part from a bad one- Then they snould be protected by their agents, their loving wives or their real friends. Phil Alpert's place on East Houston Street, New York City, offers for sale 367 different kinds of cheese from thirty seven countries . . . Those ex cessively large ear-rings make a woman appear overdressed. No woman with a sense of elegance ever wears such exaggerated jewelry. The WACs are reported to have their figure bulges well under control because of a re cently prescribed diet and sys tem of exercise. That's fine. A well streamlined WAC is a re freshing sight- But how about the women Marines? How are they doing? During the last war, the girls in the Marine Corps Re serve had a reputation of being unusually "hippy." I don't know began to bother him. The credit card was stolen from the purse of the owner, allegedly by a friend of the 17-year-old boy, who gave it to Simonsen. whether ii was because of their diet, or the type of work they did or Just a case of girls with broader figures preferring to serve in the Marine Corps. Please Ness y You - probably know places where hay fever sufferers get complete relief- Oh where asth ma disappears and even those having arthritis feel better. But can you name a place where dogs don't have fleas in the sum mer time? There 4s such para dise for pups.. It is Reno,. Ney. Not 'only are the local pupa free from fleas but, if a visiting dog arrives in Reno full of fleas, he is free of them within forty- eight hours. Seems the -fleas can't stand the Reno altitude Anyway, if while on a trip with your -dog you visit Reno, don't be surprised if he doesn t want to leave- She hasn't had her wedding ring off in fifty-six years. That's the record of Mrs. A. L. Elzel of Linthicum, Md. ... Some people who should know better, keep referring to Cleopatra as a "red haired Egyptain-" Cleopatra was a Greek, end a brunette. Pharmacy 'Brains' Joined in Wedding Lawrence, Kan, U.PJ The smartest paid in the University of Kansas school of pharmacy have joined forces. Walter Haskins married Mar garet Follett recently. They are seniors who almost have a cor ner on scholastic honors in their chosen field. Haskins has a scholastic aver age of 2.06 of a possible 3.00. An outstanding high school athlete at Kansas City, Kan., where he set and holds the record in the discus throw, Haskins has made all "A's" at K.U. The couple expects to live in Lawrence the next three years while Haskins works toward a Doctor of Philosophy degree in chemistry. THe bride expects to graduate next, spring and then work as a pharmacist Additional Words On Traffic Signs Iowa City, la. (U.PJ Traffic safety experts are considering putting an additional word on traffic signs. They think it necessary to say "full stop" instead of just "stop" and "bad curve" instead of just "curve." In fact, Bert Woodcock, an low State - Teachers College specialist in driver education, pointed out in an Iowa peace of ficers annual short course at the University of Iowa that many "no smoking signs" had to be come "positively nonsmoking" to get results. He said maybe the same thing is necessary in traffic work. Woodcock said many drivers thing that by simply slowing down at a stop sign, and sweep ing each direction with their eyes they are playing safe. "Our eyes don't have a com plete semi-circular field of vis ion," he said. "Like cameras, our e'yes focus on each of a series of pictures with gaps in between, or with a fast twist of the head, we see only one long blurred field of images." Bandar. 13.
