Green of Roseburg, has just been crowned queen of the newly dedicated Camp Easter Seal by George High Jr- son of the late Lt. George High, in whose memory the camp was dedicated. Watching the crowning cere mony are Howard Feast,, executive director of the Oregon Society for Cripded Children and Adults, and Jess Rosenbaum of La Grande (right) secretary of the society. The camp, located on North lake of Ten Mile lake near Coos Bay, is Oregon's first summer camp for crippled children. ' Oregon Officials Urged fo Press for O&C Land Return Oregon City (U.B A. W. Lafferty, Clackamas county at torney, Saturday urged Oregon's officials to press anew their pleas of a 1951 legislative me mortal railroad grant lands to the state. He based his plea on a recent report, filed by the U.S. comp troller, which hinted heavy loss es of revenue . due to certain pratices of the forest service and the Bureau of Land Man agement. Comptroller Lindsay Warren, In his report to congress, said investigators had established that "gentleman's agreements," among operators to restrict com petitive bidding, timber selling practices of the two government agencies, private control of cer tain access roads and adminis trative policies of the agencies in regard to these access roads have cost the government hun dreds of thousands of dollars in revenue loss. These losses, he said, will run high into the millions in another even years. Lafferty, in a letter to Gov. Paul Patterson and others, said it shows how the grant lands are being handled by the feder al agencies and it should point tp the need to put the lands sack under state management faculty Members Plan Pre-Frosh Days Meet Ashland The Southern Ore gon college staff will hold its pre-freshman days meetings on Monday, Tuesday and Wednes day, Sept. 14, 15, and 18, Presi dent Elmo N. Stevenson said Saturday. Planning for the new year, study and reports on academic standards, committee reports, departmental meetings, and re ports by various administrative groups and committees are on the agenda for the three-day meeting. An informal dinner for the college staff will be held in Susanne Homes Hall on Tues day evening, Dr. Stevenson said. VISITORS Mr. and Mrs,. Robert Zundel, Springfield, spent the Labor day week end in Medford with Mrs. Zundel's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Perl, North Oakdale avenue. Street Decoration Planned by Legion A permanent plan for flag decoration of the city streets on major holidays is being worked out by the Americanization com mittee of the Medford American Legion. A report will be made to the public as soon as financial details . are worked out, Larry Moulton, chairman, announces. City council approval has al ready been given. Plans for Armistice day will be announced after the Legion meeting of Sept. 22. The annual Forty and Eight bottle drive has tentatively been set for Oct. 10 and all Medford residents are being urged to start saving their empty bottles. The semi-monthly parties at the Legion Home have been sus pended and plans are being per fected to hold semi-monthly card parties. A partial report of the nation al convention was made at Tues day's meeting, with a full report to be made later. Junior Police Patrol Dedicates Bike Rack Jacksonville The Junior Police patrol at Jacksonville dedicated a public bicycle rack last week in the city's business section, according to Police Chief John Ysunza, club advisor. The purpose- of the rack, which will hold "about 12 bicy cles, is to eliminate all parking against buildings, sidewalks and streets of the town, Ysunza ex With the new rack in place, former methods of parking will be prohibited and the law strict ly enforced, he added. Material for the rack was pur chased from the club's fund, and a food sale in the near future is planned by members to obtain money for future community projects. Salem Area Farmer Named by Democrats Salem (U.R) Cornelius Bateson, farmer at Pratum near Salem, has been named to the advisory committee of the Na tional Democratic central com mittee. . The appointment was made by Stephen A. Mitchell, chair man, at his Washington head quarters. Other Oregon men SOC'Frosh Days' Program Scheduled For Sept. 16-21 Ashland Gangway upper cUmn, the frosh are taking over Southern Oregon college's campus during "Frosh Days" September 18 through 21. Harold Cloer, acting dean of men and director of guidance, said all new freshmen will move into campus dormitories for these four days for "an intensive week of work and play." " WU1 Slay In Halls Cloer emphasized that all new freshmen, including local resi dents, will be asked to reside in the campus halls during the get- acquainted period which will provide an opportunity to meet faculty members, take necessary guidance and counseling tests, meet fellow freshmen and the old-timers--the upper classmen. The class of '5? will be in augurating an entirely new pro gram this year during "Frosh Days" for. which students are taking the lead. The period will include group discussions with upperclassmen about college life, clubs, social activities, sports, studying and the like. Provides Introduction It will provide an introduc tion to college traditions, stand ards, customs, regulations, and specialized facilities; to the extra-class activities, and to the surrounding community. On Saturday the freshmen will elect an executive commit tee which will handle class af fairs until the election of perma nent class officers later in the quarter, Cloer said. Body Discovered in Snake River Said Missing Airman Ontario (U.R) A recheck of fingerprints has positively identified the Snake river mur der victim as A2-C Richard D. Speicher, 21, of Englewood, Colo., it was reported Saturday by Sgt. Wayne Huffman of the Oregon state police. Tentative identification was made Friday and Huffman later verified the name of the mur dered "airman after a check with his headquarters. -- - t. Study Background " - Meanwhile, Lt. Lyle Harrell of the state police was at Moun tain Home Air Force Base, Ida., where the airman was stationed. He said he would study "every possible angle of Speicher's background in an effort to find a clue to the brutal slaying." Oregon state and federal of ficers were conducting the in vestigation. Found la River Speicher's body was found in the Snake river above Weiser junction last Tuesday. A path ologist's report showed that he had been strangled and struck on the forehead before he died. The body was bound and gagged. The clue which led to identi fication was a high school class ring bearing the initials "R. D. S." and part of the word "Englewood." named to the committee are Dan P. McLoughlin of The Dalles, Ken Rinke of Portland and Sid ney Leiken of Roseburg. Hayes Jr., manager of the Medford J. C. Penney store for the past three months, has retir mA from the comnany after 25 years of service. He had resided at the Medford Plaza apartments after coming here from Rich mond, Calif. He left Friday and will make his home at Fresno, Calif. V. A. Ecklund, assistant manaeer who resides on Holly st, will be in charge of the store until a new manager is named in the near future. Kindergarten for Hard of Hearing To Open Tuesday The Junior Service League kindergarten for hard of hear ing children will open Tuesday at its new location, 608 Victory st The school, after the first week, will operate five mornings a week from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Anyone interested in enrolling a child in the kindergarten is asked to contact his physician, the public health department or telephone the school, 2-5835. Miss Whitlev Murohv will be a full-time instructor this year, and will permit tne league to accomodate more children. Miss Murphy for three years served as critic teacher in cnarge oi tne class of deaf children in the training department of the Mich igan State College. She also was employed in the city schools of Dubuque, Iowa. She has attend ed State Teachers College at Radford, Va., Fedbody College and the University of caiixonua. She will be assisted by league members on a volunteer basis. Open House Planned An open house will be held Sept. 20 from 2 to 5 p.m. for meeting Miss Murphy and to view the new quarters. Junior Service League members -of the kindergarten committee will be hostesses. Crater Lions club has volun teered services to complete the playground of the school. Court Releases Pair -To V.S. Authorities Two youths committed to Jackson county Jail Sept- 3 on 10-day sentences have been re leased by district court to fed eral authorities in connection with investigation of larceny of a car. Brian Ellsworth McDonald, alias Harr, 21, Coos Bay, had been given 10 days in jail by district court for no operator's license. . 'George Wesley Arrington Jr., 21, 209th field artillery, Fort Lewis, Wash., was jailed for vagrancy.
