TBZBXJirS Experts Bamboozled Croivo Uay to Rogtio Rogue River The experta were bamboozled yesterday at Rogue River when a plnt-tized bantam rooster crowed his way to the championship of ' the second National Rooster Crowing contest with a record shattering mark of 109 crows in the 30-minute period. - The previous - record was held by "Hollering Harry," who crowed 71 times last May 23 In the first such contest. "Harry" was also entered in yesterday contest, but the large Cornish Game rooster could only manage to yawn once during the contest and was too aloof to even attempt single crow. No excuse was given by "Silent" Harry's own ers, except that maybe he was a "mudder" and liked the wet weather of last spring's con test. Packs Tain The winner. "Beetlebaum," packed the crowd around his cage as he averaged over three crows a minute and noisily. Two Men Accused Of Taking Parts In Seven Slay ings Los Angeles U.R A deputy sheriff from Nevada county, Calif., Saturday attributed seven murders to a gang he said was led by Jack Santo and Emmett Perkins, co-defendants with Barbara Graham in the murder of Mabel Monahan, 62, March 9. The deputy, Wayne Brown, said Santo and Perkins were linked with these murders: Mabel Monahan, wealthy Bur bank, Calif., widow, slain in her house for $100,000 in jewels and cash a gang thought was hidden there. Baxter Shorter, implicated in the Monahan murder, but kid napped and feared killed. Gard Young and his three small daughters, killed last Oc tober, near Chester,' Calif; after he was robbed of $7,100. Edmund Hanson, gold dealer, Nevada City, Calif. Brown arrested Santo's common-law wife, Harriet Hanson, yesterday on suspicion of the Hanson murder. She was taken into custody just after she testi fied for the defense that Santo was with her at her Auburn, Calif., home March 10, the day after the state charges Santo helped kill Mrs. Monahan. Brown said George Boles is In custody at Sierra county jail, charged with suspicion in the Hanson murder. The gang is suspected of the torture and robbery of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Coiner, gold dealers, of Folsom City, Calif., shortly after Hanson was slain, Brown said. '. Legion Will Resume Meetings Tuesday Medford American Legion Post 15 will hold its first meet ing of the Fall season on Tues day night at the Legion home on South Riverside avenue, accord ing to Commander Larry Luy. The Legionnaires will discuss plans for Fall and Winter activi ties and will hear reports from members who attended the na tional convention at St. Louis, the commander said. Preliminary plans for Armis tice Day will be considered at Tuesday's meeting and the com mander, urged all Legionnaires to attend and interest them selves in making the annual observance outstanding. Other winners were Shirley Yarmol's "Birmingham Tom" with 65 crows for $15; fourth, Al Black's "Shanghai Bob," 63 crows, $10; fifth. Pat Edgerton's "Bar-L ' EP Council Plans To Study Fire Hall if ion Program Eagle Point - A special coun cil meeting will be held at Eagle Point September IS at 8 p.m. to consider bids on, constructing a new addition to the city's fire hall, according to Mayor Don Ash pole. The addition will be for the city's new fire truck, 'which is now on order from the Ameri can-La France company. Deliv ery was originally scheduled for August 6, but has been delayed until November 10, Ashpole said. ' Table Application At last week's council meet ing, the council voted to table an application by Rldgley's Stop and Shop market for a package store beer license until the spec ial meeting, according to Sam Coy, recorder-treasurer. ,' Ashpole expressed the city's appreciation to the logging firm of Skeeters and Skeeterf for changing their log truck haul route through the city from west Main st. to the -county highway. The firm had been asked by the city in a letter to complySwith the request, due to the heavy traffic of about 30 loads a day on Main st. . It was reported that Council man Jim Clark and Marshall Harold Ottosen had completed preparations for school for school crossing safety by estab lishing a school police 1 patrol and crosswalks. The mayor reported that the city has completed oiling of one mile of city streets and will fol low through next year with an other coat. It will take three years to complete the program, he pointed out, and a few streets with no oil as yet will be gravel ed this winter in preparation for next year's oiling. Hornbrook Man Held On Bed Check Charge James Monroe - Craig, 39, Hornbrook, Calif, is being, held in Jackson county 'jail on a charge of knowingly publishing a forged check. Bail, set at $2,500 in district court, had not been raised Saturday. Craig told officers varying stories about how he came into possession of the check for more than $200 made out to Maxwell L. Nelson, 904 Liberty. Nelson said he had not received the check in the mail and the en dorsed signature was not his. He said he first learned of the check when it was taken to his home by a relative of Craig who became suspicious of the check. (International Soundpkoto) Severe Shortages Of Freight Cars Said Developing Portland (U.PJ A severe freight car shortage has de veloped In the past two weeks in Southern Oregon, particularly among the mills south of Eu gene, it was reported here Saturday- R. T. Titus, executive vice president of the western forest industries association, said he h&d visited numerous operations in the Willamette and Umpqua valleys and they were "getting only from half to less than one third of the cars they need." He said the shortage ap peared most severe on the Southern Pacific line and in the southern part of the state which is served only by that railroad. Lumbermen expressed fear the shortage might extend for several weeks. However, F. C. Nelson, dis trict freight traffic manager for the Southern Pacific, said ef forts of the line over the long labor day weekend should help the situation next week. Nelson said northern lines also are 'af fected by the car shortage. Nelson said the perennial shortage has curtailed shipping the entire length of western Ore gon. He added that an ICC order to the Southern Pacific to de liver 25 cars a day to a northern line was cancelled only a week ago- Titus did not indicate that any mills were closing down because of the shortage. t He saw several reasons for the shortage, including the heavy use of cars for grain and canned good movements.
