Mosquitoes, which have been thriving in Jackson county this year, constitute an itchy, painful and disturbing nuisance. On that resident are agreed. But do they constitute a ser ious health hazard? The answer appears to be no. Dr. A. Erin Merkel. county health officer, informs The Mail Tribune how mosquitoes fit into tiie health pattern of the county, and why his office 1s powerless to do very much to combat them. ThrM Diseases There are three principal mosquito-borne diseases, encephali tis (also known as sleeping sick ness), yellow fever and malaria. Of the three, only the first is causing any worry to public health authorities of the Pacific Northwest. This disease, which Is a "brain fever" type of illness, has caused a number of deaths in California in recent years, and few cases have been reported In southern Oregon. Encephalitis is carried by a mosquito of the culex variety, and by that variety only. This type of insect breeds largely in stagnant water, such as mill ponds and larger sloughs. And it is the culex which is the tar get of the limited funds avail able for mosquito control through the local county health department. This year many of the county's mill ponds have been sprayed With a DDT solution in an oil base as a measure against the culex mosquitoes, and Dr. Erin Merkel believes the effects have been good. In answer to questions about yellow fever and malaria, how ever, Dr. Merkel is confident there is no reason to' be appre hensive. This is why: As To Malaria Malaria is carried by an ano pholene type mosquito (of which there are some in Jackson county), but the disease cannot develop in the mosquitoes if the temperature ever gets below about 70 degrees. In addition, the health officer explained, before the disease can be transmitted, there must be someone suffering from malaria for the insect to bite to pick up the "bugs" which cause the dis ease. As recently as 10 years ago, quiescent cases of malaria were not infrequent, but recent re search has developed drugs which completely eradicate ma laria in humans with one dose, not Just keep it dormant As a result there is now no "reser voir" of malarial individuals, and the anophelene mosquitoes are no more of a threat than the oth er "nuisance" varieties. Yellow Fever Yellow fever Is another trop ical disease, carried by the aedes aegypti mosquito. There are some aedes-type mosquitoes here. But this is another case where there is no "reservoir" of in fected' humans the Insects can bite to pick up the infection. Yellow fever is a tropical dis ease, and is classed as "non-ex-istant" in the United States. Even if someone infected came to this county (perhaps a Mexi can worker, although this is un likely for Mexico is nearly as free from the diseases as is this country) the mosquito must bite him during the acute stage of the illness before it can be trans mitted to another. While this event is so unlikely as to be al most impossible, still, if it did, not more than one or two other persons could be infected. Dr. Merkel also explained why considerable sums have been spent on mosquito control in oth er nations from U.S.A. and U.N. funds, while none is available here. It is because in those other areas the mosquitoes are causing deaths and illness, while here they are not. If (and it is an "if Dr. Merkel does not regard ser iously) some sort of mosquito borne disease broke out here. federal funds, through the U. S. Public Health Service, would be available. Mainly Nuisance Value The health officer agreed with residents of the county's mos quito-plagued areas that the in sects are a nuisance of consider able magnitude. But since they do not constitute a threat to pub lic health, there is little, he can do about it It would take a county-wide movement in which all residents participate to .wipe out the mos quito plague, for the fresh water, early-spring hatchers, which cause most of the trouble, breed practically anywhere- in tin cans, in garbage dumps, in pud dles, streams and marshes. A united effort toward eliminating the breeding places is the best way to combat them. Dr. Merkel explained. Spraying, which is extremely expensive, is a tem porary solution at best. Oil sprays on water and the elimination of other breeding spots by draining or filling, offer the best chance of permanent control, he said. NOW TRUST.
