i 'Missing Months' In Life of Hero Thought Cleared Chapel Hill, N. C. flJ.FO A University of North Carolina professor believes he has cleared ira the mvsterv of the 20 "miss ing months" In the life of the American naval hero, John Paul Jones. Dr. Archibald Henderson said 'no one In the world can show documentary evidence that Jones was anywhere on the face 01 tne earth for 20 months after Feb. 1. 1774, although hundreds of scholars have attempted to do so through the years. Here's what he thinks happened: "John Paul, while master of a ship around the year 1772, had trouble with a crew member and flogged him at the port of Tobago in the West Indies. After returning to England the sailor bitterly showed his wounds to many people, denouncing John Paul. More Trouble "Three months later the man died at sea on another vessel, but it was believed his death was a result of the flogging. John Paul had to obtain many affidavits to prove his innocence, but finally did so. "Two years later, he had trouble again at Tabago with another sailor, and this time he killed him. There was no ad miralty commission in Tobago at this time and this rendered John Paul's position very hazard ous. The two incidents were heavy on Jones' conscience, and, afraid he would not receive Justice, he went incognito for 20 months." Henderson said he thinks he has discovered the name that Jones used but is waiting for further verification. Medford Activians To Name Glad Queen Five members of the Medford Active club are serving as a panel of judges to select the Queen of the Grants Pass Gladiolus Show being held there yesterday and today. ' Activians who will select Queen Gladys this evening at the Grants Pass fairgrounds will be president Jack Cummings, Ray Huson, Russell DeForrest, Robert DeGroot and Bud Pal mer. They attended the Monday meeting of the Grants Pass Ac tive Club this week where they met the seven princesses, all 1953 graduates of the Grants Pass area, who are competing for the honor of being named Queen Gladys. Over 40 The tendency of many organi zations is to refuse to employ men over 40. I think it is a mistake. The experience of such men should be taken advantage of. I have heard it claimed that the best salesmen and saleswom en are those over 40. Handicapping Running horses are handicap ped by weight How are harness horses handicapped? That is a query put to me. Harness horses are handicapped on the 'scratch' system. The best horse starts far back of the others. Next best gets a little closer start The equivalent of the light weight in a running race is per mitted to start up in front. This system is still use at some har ness tracks controlled by the mutuel wagering machine Indus try. The bettors don't care for that type of handicapping. So, at most tracks,. the harness horses are not handicapped at all. KENTUCKY Tattoo Camouflages Ugly Birthmarks Chicago U.R) Tattooing has been used effectively to comoufiage ugly dark purple birthmarks, says a New York plastic surgeon. Dr. Herbert Conway of the New York Hospital-Cornell Medi cal Center described the tech nique in the Journal of the American Medical Association. A thick solution of natural skin color pigment is injected into the stained skin with an oscillating needle. Conway said an area of from four to five square inches may be treated in one hour by a skilled technician. He said he achieved an 83 per cent rate of satisfactory results in cases where dilated blood ves sels which caused the birth marks were beneath the inner skin or in the deeper part of the inner skin itself. He said the technique does not work if the abnormal blood ves sels are immediately beneath the outer layer of skin. QUICK JUDGMENT Hartford, Conn. Thursday, August 13, 1133 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE Counterfeit Check Passed at Grocery A counterfeit forged check with the name Pacific Machin ery Co. printed on the top was passed in Medford yesterday, police .records revealed. The check was not issued by Pacific Machinery and was apparently printed on a small home press, officers said. Police said the New Ivy Mar ket 106 North Ivy sft. cashed a check for $67.33. This check. like a similar check previously passed at the Central Market, was signed with a rubber stamp and drawn on the Medford branch of the U. S. National bank. The check is believed to have been passed by a woman who purchased $3.50 worth of gro ceries. She was described as about 40, five feet eight inches tall, and weighing about 135 pounds. She had light brown hair and gave the impression of being a housewife, police records said. She was alone when the check was cashed. This year is the three hun dreth anniversary of the publi cation of Walton's "The Com pleat Angler." Vestinghouse Coach Display Scheduled A unique display coach will provide a combination stage, auditorium and exhibit hall for Westinghouse Electric Corpora tion "push-button" control equip ment for industry here next week: Now a nation-wide tour, the 34-foot, 10-ton coach will open its doors to design engineers, maintenance people, and super visory personnel in Medford, August 17. The coach will be on display at 1233 Court st, Westinghouse Electric supply headquarters in Medford. The coach shows how common electrical devices such as line starters, control stations, mo tors, and circuit breakers can be used to bring about success ful automatic control of indus trial machines. Westinghouse is taking the "automaton" coach to custom er plants and other interested groups all over the country.
