The victory kept them five games Yakima Whacks Salem Nine, 9-3 By UNITED PRESS Yakima whacked Salem 9-3 In the opening game of their Western International league series last night. The loss put Salem one and a half games behind league-leading Spokane. Danny Rios scattered nine hits among the Senators to pile up a 15-6 record while Dave Dahl, relieved in the eighth by Bob Collins, took the loss. In other games, Spokane downed Edmonton in both ends of a double header, 5-1, and 4-2; Calgary took a twin bill from Lewiston. 4-0, and 17-9; Van couver dropped Victoria, 6-3, and Tri-City edged "Wenatchee, 11-10. FIGHT TO DRAW Butte (U.R) Bobby Woods, 134, Spokane, battled to a 10- round draw with Freddie (Babe) Herman, 136, Los Angeles, in the feature event of a fight card last night. The event was last held in 1951 at Detroit, with the LaFay- ette, Ind., swim club winning the team title. Last year " the Olympic trials were substituted for the championships. All but two of last year's Olympic team members will be here for this year's event. Some of the girls have been here more than a week practic ing at the Jantzen beach pool. Among the team favorites are LaFayette, Walter Reed Swim Club of Washington, D.C., and the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Swim Club. But 27 teams in all are entered and competition for the overall title, as well as individ ual events, is expecter to be ter rific. Honolulu's Phil Kim Scores First Round TKO Over Elmer Beltz Los Angeles U.PJ Hono lulu's Phil Kim boasted anoth er welterweight victory today after scoring a first round tech nical knockout over Elmer Beltz. The Honolulu tiger won his TKO decision over the Los An geles fighter only 2:25 into the first round of last night's sched uled 10-round main event at Olympic auditorium. Kim waded into Beltz with the opening bell, sending him to the canvas for an eight count. Beltz got up, but seconds later the islander had him helpless on the ropes. ; EX-GRIDDERS IMPROVED Corvallis (U.R) Former Oregon State football stars Don Durdan and Quentin Greenough were reported in improved con dition and out of danger today by attendants at Good Samaritan hospital. Guardsmen Take Two Victories; Lithians Win National Guard took a pair of victories from Mobilgas Monday night in Medford Softball asso ciation play, and Lithia defeated Andy's Jewelers, 12 to 9. Dick Phillips was the winning hurler In both contests for the Guardsmen as they downed Mo bilgas 9 to 2, and 11 to 10. He held Mobilgas without a run for four frames of the first game as his teammates built up a 9 to lead, and relieved Gene Snook in the first inning of the second game to get credit for the win. Lithia exploded for six tallies in each of the last two innings to gain their victory after trailing Andy's 5 to 0 at one point in the game. A total of 8 errors by the Jewelers aided the winners' cause. Cook hit a home run for the losers in the third inning. Tonight's contests find Chris Drugs meeting Mobilgas in the 7 p.m. contest and YMCA play ing National Guard at 8:15 p.m. The first game of the league playoffs are tentatively slated for Friday, with the champion ship and third place games on Saturday. Policeman Assists Roomless llewlyweds Houston (U.R) Policeman J, B. Calloway stopped a couple for speeding in downtown Hous ton and found himself serving as a sort of Dan Cupid. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Baker said they had Just been married ear lier in the evening and drove to Galveston to spend their wed ding night. But hotels there were filled and they returned to Houston where the downtown hotels also were filled. They were embarking on a tour of motels near the edge of the city when Calloway stopped them. He bypassed fourth spot and made it from sixth to third. Jack McCoy managed to hold on to his fourth spot and so did Bob Wilcox. (U.R) Howard Williamson's automobile picked a poor place to stall right in front of the Elsmere tax office. Police Chief Ray Merriman am bled outside to offer help, but said Williamson "almost fell over me." The chief escorted Williamson to his office and charged him with driving with 1951 license plates, driving while under the influence of alcohol, and no driver's license. Aragon, a 2V4 to 1 favorite, hopes to get fights with Chuck Davey and later Kid Gavilan, the welterweight champion, if he licks Davis.
