Milliners Multiply Fall Hat Varieties With New Materials Hats, new for Fall, whether from an exclusive designer or a popular "bar," are designed to give a pleasant pampering look. Encouraged by the widespread acceptance of textured surfaces, milliners have multiplied their Fall variety of silhouettes by the use of new materials and com binations. Newest of the silhouette trends is a tendency to make crowns deeper, in many cases completely covering the back of the head or fitting well down at one side or both. For the devotee of the dressy little "cap," this look of greater crown depth is largely achieved by shaping the calot in com pound curves that fit deep at one side and high on the other to reveal the hair at the front and back. Bonnets, too, sometimes have merely the illusion of depth which is attained by the use of long scooped or visored brims that start well up on the brow, dip down to cover the tips of the ears and swoop forward. Turbans and berets look both deeper and sometimes higher by artful arrangement of their folds. Another important silhouette movement accents side-to-side width. The milliners like the wide-eyed charm of a hat with width at the temples, balanced or asymmetric in line. Many of the shallow young shell shapes look new for Fall with rolling bicorne brims and soft drapery from side to side. Dramatic black velvet, velour and plush, usually in solid black or navy velvet, velours or hat- j ter's plush are featured for these. Fitted Down Profile hats continue to be a major silhouette. For Fall, they are fitted deeply down over the right ear and sharply angled up wards by soaring feathers or other trimmings high on the left, or dip daringly down at the right with a long, forward-mov ing drapery or fold. In the mood of autumn ele gance, the softly rippling "Gar bo" casual becomes increasingly important for daytime wear. Deep-piled felts and velours, fre quently trimmed with a band or buckle of jet or jewels, make these nonchalant shapes dressy enough for almost any daytime occasion. Because it has such a wonder ful velvety surface and takes so well to color, velours is again one of the favorite Fall hat ma terials. "Vis-a-vis" felts that have one sleek flat side -and the other napped will be seen most often, this Fall, in monotone combinations that make the most of texture contrasts without in troducing a second color. "Fancy" velvets, as well as the familiar panne and Lyons types, are another favorite. One of the most interesting of these novelty velvets has a contrasting silk back and is etched in a pat tern that allows the contrasting under surface to peek through. bit's hair or angora, have a won- i derful soft look both in solid colors and .in neutrals flecked ! with touches of contrast. One 1 new Fall felt is pure white with a delicate frosting of black angora woven through it. Still j another has a curly knotted sur face like chinchilla cloth. Clear reds and :' light winy reds; copper, russet and vivid orange; gold, sharp . yellow and warm beige tones;, deep forest greens and pale j greyed mossy shades; vivid pea- cock, navy and ice blues; cycla- men and reddish purples; char- j coal and smoke greys are among the most popular. Black and a bright shade, or bold black-and-white looks newer than solid black, except for very dressy cocktail and evening hats.
