Past Neble Grands Hold Annual Picnic fit E. W. Pease Home Past Noble Grands club of Olive Rebekah lodge held a pic nic at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Pease, Sunday, August 10 with about 55 present. Mrs. Donald Ivie, noble grand presented Mrs. Eva Jewel, past noble grand, with a 40-year jewel as a gift from her lodge, Santiam Rebekah lodge, Mill City, Ore. The committee assisting the hostess at the picnic were Mrs A. H. Hansen, Mrs. James Flem ing, Mrs. Bert Kenyon, and Mrs Frances Taylor. Guests attend ing the gathering were Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Hanby. He is grand chaplain of Oregon Odd Fellows Olive Rebekah lodge will meet at 8 p.m. Monday, August 18, in IOOF hall with Mrs. Donald Ivie. noble grand, in charge. The committee for refreshments will be Mrs. Carl Pearson and Mrs Eber T. Weed. Nebraska Woman Guest in Medford Mrs. Spencer Butterfield of Norfolk, Neb., will leave today after having been a guest the past week of Mr. and Mrs. J.C.S. Weills, 30 Keenway drive. Mrs. Butterfield's son, John played in the national Junior Chamber of Commerce golf tour nament in Eugene last week. He is to join his mother here today and the two will begin their trip home. Grape Miss Hoskins Wed To Vernon Glenn At Baptist Church The wedding of Miss Mary Virginia Hoskins to Vernon Dale Glenn was solemnized by the Rev. Wolford A. Dawes in an afternoon ceremony at First Bap tist church Saturday, August 9. The bride's parents are Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Hoskins, 208 Tripp street. The bridegroom, who is in the U. S. Navy, is the son of Mrs. Effie Glenn, Chelsea, Okla. The double-ring ceremony was performed in a setting of candel abra and baskets of white glad iolus and fern. Given in mar riage by her father, the bride wore a gown of white net over satin, fashioned ballerina style with lace bodice and long lace sleeves. She carried a white or chid and carnation bouquet. Maid of honor for the cere mony was Miss Lois Ann Glenn, niece of the bridegroom. She wore a royal blue taffeta and net gown. Bridesmaids were Miss Virginia Sullenger, who was dressed in rose net and taf feta, and Mrs. Raymond De Car low, whose dress was of aqua net and taffeta. They carried white, aqua, and pink carnations with .headdresses of matching carnations. Wayne . Glenn acted as best man for his brother, and ushers were the bridegroom's cousins Murray L. Neal and Homer Sul livan. Donna Sullivan, cousin of the bridegroom, who served as flower girl, wore yellow or gandy. . Candlelighters Glenda Glenn and Janet Hobbs wore dresses similar to that of the flower girl. Music was provided by Glenn Lamb who sang two songs ac companied by Miss Amelia Kauf man at the organ. After the reception held at the church, the newlyweds trav elled to California and through Yosemite- national park. They will , make their home in San Diego. The bride is graduate of Medford high -school and a for mer, employee of the Pacific Telephone company. The bride groom graduated from high school in Chelsea, Okla. The bride's father. W. S. Templer, Downey, Calif., was in Medford for the ceremony. 1 . Medford Teacher Technical Director Umpqua Cavalcade Roseburg A Medford teach er, who spends nine months of the year telling students about dramatics, takes time out sum mers to prove he knows what hes talking about. He is Bob Stedman, who re fuses to be called Robert, and who teaches dramatics for the Medford schools. Mr. Stedman is technical di rector for the Umpqua Caval cade, a huge stage production depicting the history of Douglas county. The Medford instructor has also been technical director for other pargeants, notably the Oregon Trail Pageant ,in Eu gene, which is presented each three years. The Umpqua Cavalcade will be presented at the Douglas County fairgrounds in Roseburg three nights, Aug. 30, 31 and Sept. 1. - Stedman, who was active in the Ashland Shakesnearean Fes tival when it started in the middle SO's, is presently working on the immense 225-foot long stage for the Roseburg pageant. The stage, similar in design to that used in the Shakespearean plays, but considerably larger, contains 45,000 board feet of lumber and 8,000 square feet of plywood enough to build sev eral houses. The pageant, directed by Horace Robinson, head of the University of Oregon theater, will dramatically portray his tory of Douglas county dating to the time of the Indians. Thrilling Indian attacks, bloody massacres, a stage coach robbery, the California gold rush, the arrival of Sir Francis Drake and many other events adapted from authentic history of the county, will be staged by a cast of some 1,500 performers. Shower Party Given For Two Honor Guests Mrs. Don Newbury and daughter, Mrs. James Denison were hostesses at a shower hon oring Mrs. Robert Zundel and Mrs. Charles Martin Jr. on Thursday, August 14 at the New bury home, 7 Eastwood drive. Guests were Mrs. Richard Leever, Mrs. Thomas Oakes, Mrs. Lee Neidermeyer, Miss Janice Walker, Miss Jacqueline Rhymes, and the honor guests. The hostesses served a des sert on the outdoor patio, and the gifts were presented to Mrs. Zundel and Mrs. Martin in a bassinet. Gleasons Here Mr. and Mrs. Royal Gleason of Albany, Ore., are spending two weeks in Medford with rel atives and friends. Mrs. Gleason is the former Janet Shaw, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shaw, 641 Pine street, and Mr. Gleason is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest M. Gleason, 2684 Crater Lake highway. Before her marriage the bride was Mary Virginia Hoskins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Hoskins. 208 Tripp street, and the bridegroom is a son of Mrs. Effie Glenn, Chelsea, Okla. The newlyweds will live in San Diego where the bridegroom is on duty with the United Slates Navy. (Anders Photo) Slides To Be Shown At Meeting Wednesday Past Chiefs' club of Pythian Sisters will meet at 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, at the home of Mrs. Delia Watkins, 19 Mistletoe street. Scenic slides will be shown, after which dessert will be served by the hostess. Husbands of the members interested in seeing the slides are invited to attend. Californians Here Mr. and Mrs. Max West, Sac ramento, Calif., were in Med ford last week to visit Mrs. West's mother, Mrs. Frida Burg er, 512 North Bartleet street. No Phi Mu Sorority To Be Dinner Guests At Filsinger Home ; Mrs. Ralph Filsinger, 210 Stark street, will be hostess at a Mexican dinner given for mem bers and guests of Nu Phi Mu sorority Monday, August 18. Preceding the dinner .the guests will meet at Hawthorne park for a swimming party.' : At this meeting the sorority will choose a "Lynn Terry" honor girl. The girl chosen will be an honorary pledge of . the sorority. Several members of the soror ity made a trip to Crescent City, Calif., and Brookings, Ore., last Sunday. The group left Medford in the early morning and had breakfast in Grants Pass. Mem bers making the trip were Miss Mary Ellen Smith, Miss Jo Anne Christian, Miss Anna May, Miss Virginia Larson, Miss Pat Merri man, Miss Jacqueline Walker, Miss Bette Ridgely and Miss Carol Herdman. ' f- ' Former Nebraskans -Hold Annual Picnic; New Officers Named Frank Arnold, Central Point, was elected president of former Nebraskans at the annual picnic held Sunday, August 10, at Tou Velle park. - Other officers are Fred Thor man, vioe president; and Mrs. Reuban Arnold, secretary-treasurer. About 175 were present for the potluck dinner.- A musical program was given by Mrs. Al exander's string band, and Eldon and Fern Brainard presented two vocal duets. Al Siemsen was also on the program. Games were played during the afternoon. Prizes were awarded to W. S. Baker, formerly of Lincoln, Neb., and now of Grants Pass, for being the oldest person at the picnic born in Nebraska; to the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Arvin Reynolds, formerly of Scotts Bluff and now of Medford, for being the youngest person born in that state; and the George Robertson family, formerly of Tilden and now of Medford for being the largest family present born in Nebraska. Medford Couple Married Sunday In a ceremony at First Meth odist church Sunday, August 10, Mrs. Frances Martinez became the bride of Carlton Fitzgerald. The bride is the daughter of John H. Wessman, Mackay, Ida., and the bridegroom is the son of Edward Fitzgerald, Missis sippi. The Rev. Hardwick W. Harsh man . performed the afternoon ceremony. Matron of honor was Mrs. Beatrice Davis, and the best man was William Peters, Calif. The bride wore a pink suit and her flowers were white and pink carnations. Mrs. Davis was attired in a blue dress and pink and white carnations. The couple will make their home at 747 Ross lane. Auxiliary To Hear Convention Reports The auxiliary to Crater Lake post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will elect a junior vice president at the meeting set for Tuesday, August 19 at 8 o'clock in VFW hall. Reports of the national con vention of VFW which was held at Los Angeles will be given by Mrs. Richard Schultz and Mrs. Merrill Beneka. Annual Picnic Held By Former Kansans Sunday in Ashland About 130 former Kansans met at Lithia Park for a picnic Sunday, August 10. Letters of commendation from Governor Douglas McKay, Ore gon, and Governor Edward F. Arn, Kansas, were read to the group, and Mrs. Elmer Gott gave a reading. New officers for 1952-53, elected at the picnic, include Miles B. Smith, president; Mrs. Elmer Gott, vice president; and Allen D. Curry, secretary-treasurer. Mrs. J. O. N. Poling, retiring president, made the presenta tions to the different contest winners. They were Mrs. Carrie E. Young, "86, oldest Kansan present; the Walker M. Caldwell family, largest family; Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Caster, couple mar ried longest; and C. H. Smith, Independence, Kansas, newest arrival from Kansas. He had ar rived the day of the picnic. .
