That's right a slingshot. May 19-Year-0lds Hear Draft Call Washington (U.R) The stepped-up pace of draft calls "eventually" may force the gov ernment to start tapping 19-year-olds for service, a Selective Service spokesman said Tues day. The Army set the pace for higher draft calls Monday when it ordered Selective Service to induct 4,700 men in October, the largest draft call since last February. Draft calls are expected to continue at about the same rate for the next several months be cause of the Army's need to re place men who were inducted after the outbreak of the Korean war and who are now becoming eligible for release from service. New Atomic Energy Plant To Be Built Washington (U.R) The Atomic Energy Commission will build a new $1,219,000,000 ex plosives plant between Wake field and Piketon in. Pike Coun ty, Ohio, it was learned Tuesday. The site will be about 18-20 miles north of Portsmouth in Southern Ohio. It will be on the Scioto river which flows into the Ohio river at Portsmouth. The new plant will be a giant gaseous diffusion works nearly twice as large as the atomic ex plosives plant built in wartime at Oak Ridge, Tenn. It will be the major new atom ic facility to be built under a $3,500,000,000 expansion pro gram on which the AEC is now embarked. Locally Owned Horse Appaloosa Winner Calvin W. Briley's horse Bud took a second-place ribbon last week during the Appaloosa horse show as Quincy, Calif. Briley, Box 234, Phoenix, is a director of the nationwide Appaloosa Horse club. Briley's horse was entered in the two-year-old halter class. Horses were entered from all over the western part of the United States. The Appaloosa show was part of the Plumas county fair. The Appaloosa dates back farther than any other living horse, according to experts. The horse ig used today for nearly all purposes, according to Mrs. Briley. They are gentle enough to make good riding horses, yet are very powerful and are good workhorses. It sounds like a ridiculous weapon for a modern war. But this war isn't so modern, any way, old soldiers say. They say it is a lot more like World War I than World War II Fitting Idea So the slingshot seemed like a fitting idea. Especially when you consider that eight men stretching a rubber inner tube over the fork of an old tree can heave grenades right into the Chinese lines. Capt. Howard Connolly, New York, was fiddling with the slingshot when I got to the front, sweating in a plastic body armor vest and tin hat. "Trouble with this damn thing," Connolly said a bit moodily, "is that I've just found out than I can throw grenades farther with my hand and come a lot closer to what I'm aiming at." "We got trouble enough up here with enemy mortar without our own guys slapping us on the head with rations," Connolly said. . Allies Apologize For Jet Flights Over Panmunjom Panmunjom, Korea. (U.R) The United Nations "admitted Tuesday that "in all probabil ity" Allied jet planes entered the Panmunjom neutral zone Sunday and apologized for the incident. In a written reply to a Com munist protest, senior U.N. liaison officer Col. Charles W. McCarthy said, "our side will make continued efforts to pre vent occurrences of this type." Note Only Activity The note was handed to the Communists at a meeting be tween liaison officers, the only activity at the truce camp. The armistice talks are in another one-week recess, called Monday by the Allies for the third time in as many weeks on grounds the Reds have offered nothing new in the deadlocked discus sions on prisoner exchange. The U.N. said in its note of apology that "it appears at least two and possibly three jet type aircraft flew over the con ference site area at approximate ly 1900 hours on 10 August, 1952." Postmaster Exams Set For Prospect Office Examination for a postmaster for Prospect has been announc ed by the civil service commis sion. An annual salary of $3,781 goes with the position. Applicants may get informa tion at the Medford post office, where the examination will be given. To be eligible for the position applicants must be American citizens in good physical condi tion and actually living in the area covered by the post office, and they must be between 21 and 63 years of age.
