They were married in Charlotte-, . N. C. on Friday. A serious illness wiped Carolyn's memory clean and the story of her re-education from first grade up was printed by Life Magazine on her graduation, Gwyn saw the story, wrote to Carolyn and the romance that fol lowed ended in marriage and this domestic scene. Institution has reported that "dramatic progress" in health has cut the U.S. death rate almost in half since the turn of ;the century. . The private research organiza tion said the death rate has drop ped from 17.2 per 1,000 popu lation to 9.6 in 50 years, while control of communicable dis eases has advanced so far that emphasis has swung . to wiping out chronic, degenerative mal adies such as cancer and heart disease. Drug Use on Wane The report, entitled Health Resources in the United States, also said there is evidence that drug addiction and veneral dis eases are on the wane. But the most striking victory of all was won over infant deatn. In 1900, the infant mortality rate was 130 out of 1,000. By 1950 it had droDDed to 30. The report emphasized that the progress was acnievea ae spite some shortages of physi cians and facilities. It said the nation now has 127 physicians for every 100,000 persons and one hospital bed for every 100 persons. Research Summarized The 300-page book summar ized three years of Brookings research in which more than 700 public and private health agen cies participated. Purpose of the study, the In stitution said, is to help decide how best to use, order and im prove the nation s health re sources. Wilson, chairman of the board at Standard Oil of Indiana said Tuesday plants constructed now to' make synthetic gasoline would be "obsolete" before they were completed. He said such' construction, as proposed by Secretary of the In terior Oscar Chapman, would be "most premature." ' She provides entertain ment in the form of games, quiz contests, tours and picnics for all totally disabled veterans - at the domiciliary, including wheel chair, lame and blind members. At the gathering Friday she made an announcement which has all her following guessing. "I will not be here next Fri day," she told them, "because I intend to take a vacation the first one I have ever had." In the spirit of the quiz which occupied their attention earlier, they tried to figure where she was going but she wouldn't tell. One member offered the bold idea that she was going on a second honeymoon. Genevieve did not deny the intimation. She merely smiled. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ewert and two daughters Audrey and Barbara spent a few days with Postmaster and Mrs. Arthur Scarseth on a visit to the Oregon country. They will go to Crater lake and other points of interest before driving back to Los An geles, their home. Mr. Ewert is Mrs. Scarseth's brother. He is a consulting elec trical engineer and has done im portant government work along the coast. It is Capt. Edwin F. McEvers now. He has taken the place in charge of Company A, held by Ray C. Peterson, who has been incapacitated by illness and is now on' furlough. McEvers was Company 1 sergeant until the promotion was made last week. 4-H Club News Applgata 4-H Club Applegate 4-H club held its community fair on August 6 at Applegate school house. Two classes of shorthorn cattle, a class of hogs and a class of sheep were judged by the club and visiting club members. Lunch was served at noon by mothers of club members. Francis Skin ner, 4-H agent from Klamath county, was judge for the affair. Afternoon activities included a beef, dairy, sheep and swine showmanship contest. Winners were Applegate beef seniors showmanship, Mitzie Baysinger, Anita Kubli and Gary Krause. Visitors and Applegate junior beef showmanship, Gwen Krause, Betty Anne Higday and Anette Granger; seniors beef winners were, Marilyn Bohnert, Geraldine Hayes and Marvin Hamilton. Grand champion beef showman was Marilyn Bohnert of Antelope club. Seniors dairy showmanship, Applegate club, Mitzie Baysing er, Gwen Krause and Donna Lee Brown.
