I O J Around Hollywood Hollywood (U.R) William Powell said sadiy Wednesday he may have . to retire after 20 years of star dom7, because the movies don't come up with many parts "for an old ' workhorse like me." The suave 60-year-old actor and his famous mustache, still . A lino Mosbr twitching but graying, have no plans to retire permanently to his Palm Springs patio. He doesn't want to. But roles for "a man of my years" are scarce, he said. "It's difficult to find pictures," said Powell as he lounged in his dressing room at MGM. "I'm too far along to carry romantic roles. Movie goers don't want to see old goats like me as the lovers. "My con tract at MGM ends next April. And beyond that I don't know what will happen. Til come back for good roles, if I can find them." But the last few years, MGM has loaned him to other studios "because the studio didn't have any parts for me." Sought Mature Parts "I realize I had to face Old Father Time," he said. "So I did Life With Father' at Warner's. 'That character role turned out pretty well, and I began to cast about for some more mature roles." . He played older men in sev eral pictures like "Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid." Now he's back at MGM for the first time in five years to portray Eliza beth'Taylor's father in "The Girl Who Had Everything." Problem Discussed Powell said he discussed his casting roblem with MGM big wigs. "But they explained that most movie fans are under 30," he said. "So the studio has to think where the dough comes from. I understand that. The audiences want to see the young ones." Verdon of the Washateria, Shady Cove, now have the agency . for the Western Auto Supply. Nick Vaughn, an old-timer in the area, now has his trailer parked on the Walt Messecar property at Trail. Mr. and Mrs. Don Arnold and family of Trail are moving from the old Wehde residence next to the Messecars to a place near McLeod. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Roberts and children, Kathleen and David are guests of Mr. and MrSf Jerry Hicks and family of Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Thomas of Sutherlin were Sunday visitors of Mrs. Ona Moon and family of Shady Cove. Mrs. Hugh Huntley and chil dren of Medford spent a day re cently visiting Mr. and Mrs. Joe Waltz of Shady Cove. Donald Baldwin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lane of Shady Cove is working for the summer at Walla Walla, Wash., and will attend the Adventist College there this fall. Shady Cove-Trail Lions and Lady Lions held a picnic Sunday at the Camp Site of Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Williams at Diamond Lake. Members and guests pres ent were Mr. and Mrs. Cartee Wood and children, Mr. and Mrs. Don Harmon and family, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Jantzer and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Greer and family, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fagalde, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Strother, newcomers to Shady Cove; Mr. and Mrs. M. My husband comes and -goes as he pleases with no consideration for me. I can't join him in his outdoor sports because my feet hurt from ar thritis. His affection has dwin dled from a good bye or good night kiss and he has even el iminated that now. All he cares about are his friends and past times. It's awful to be unlov ed and unwanted at my age. It that the way a man of his age acts? What should I do be fore the rest of my life is ruin ed?" They become forgetful or un reasonable, or they lack emo tional warmth, Invariably they are self- centered. Your husband is showing old age in his behavior. All that really matters to him are his own comforts. You, unfortun ately, do not seem to fit into these interests because you are physically unable to join in the activities he likes. And, instead of doing things to please you, he does what pleases him. If you had a family, you could compensate for his lack of at tention and affection by your interests in others. As matters stand, you are left with no one to give you love or compan ionship. No Use To Be Martyr There is no use for you to be a martyr to a lost cause for the rest of your life. Unless you can change things, you would do well to go where you are need ed and wanted. Try taking a vacation from your husband and home. Let him see for himself how much he re lies on you for his physical com forts. After a few months of be ing alone, I guarantee that he will find his friends and past times are not enough and will beg you to come back.
