Brady, TONSILLECTOMY HAS A HIGH MORTALITY Dr. Brady Miss Jane Doe, we'll call her, aged 18, died Monday while having her tonsils removed un der anesthesia in the operat ing room at Patients' Hos pital, we'll call it. Dr. John Doe, we'll call him, deputy coroner, said the cause was difficult to de termine with , out an autopsy nd thatno one could be blamed for-tbe-tteath. . " " The item is quoted from a newspaper report, except the identifying names. A medical colleague sends it, with this comment: "How right you are in your teachings . . . This time the "cause was difficult' to deter mine.' The girl, aged 18, was too old for the scapegoat thymus or status thymicolym phaticus." - ( ,' M. D.) . The coroner's deputy didn't know the cause of death, but he knew no one could be blamed for the girl's death.. That may be so, if there was no alternative for the major op eration. I wonder how the doc tor or doctors who advised the girl . to submit to tonsillectomy feet about it. For that matter, I wonder how any doctor who has figured in such a tragedy feels about it. Tonsillotomy was formerly the standard meth od of "removing" tonsils. It went out of fashion only because the modern trick specialists, the everready .operators invented the slogan "get all the tonsil" as though tonsil tissue in itself is harmful. With this wicked, unscientific invention, the ever- with millions who make It their first choice aw Factory Lay-Offs In Slight Decline Washington (U.R) Fac tory lay-offs declined slightly during June despite the nation wide steel strike, the Labor . De partment reported Tuesday. The department's Bureau of Labor Statistics said factories laid off 10 workers per 1,000 employed during June, compar ed to 11 in the previous month. It explained that large steel inventories, laid in before the steel strike, "allowed virtually uninterrupted production in most manufacturing plants dur ing the month." Such defense - related indust ries or ordnance, metals, electri cal machinery and instruments even reported fewer layoffs than the previous month. Soft goods industries, including food, tex tiles, apparel and leather, also had fewer layoffs. Salem (U.R) A non-profit nursery school in Central Point, Ore., has filed articles of corp oration with the state corpora tion commissioner in Salem. Signing articles for the West Side. September Banquet Set for Apprentice ready operators stampeded the dumb rank and file of the pro fession into wholesale tonsil and adenoid 'operations which amounted to wholesale malprac tice in the early decades of this century. As for the treatment of in fected tonsils, it is my belief and advice that one subject to any trouble ascribed to infected ton sils should choose electro-coagulation (diathermy) treatment at the hands of a physician skilled in this method. It is safe, wheth er the subject is a good risk for surgery or not, and, so far as I can learn by long study and ob servation, it gives results at least as good as any one can ex pect from' radical surgery. Tickets must be picked up by August 29. The banquet will be served buffet style. Walter Griffin, regional supervisor of the fed eral Bureau of Apprenticeship, will be the main speaker. C. W. Crary, chairman of the local ap prentice council, will be master of ceremonies.
