Stevenson shifted his at tention Tuesday to farm policy and the farm vote after answer ing charges that his presidential campaign bore a left-wing stamp. One of the visitors scheduled to drop in at the Illinois execu tive mansion Tuesday was Secre tary of Agriculture Charles F. Brannan, who asked for an ap pointment with Stevenson. Aided Truman It was Brannan who was cred ited with calling the plays which enabled. President Truman to make unexpected inroads into Republican strength in the Mid western farm belt in the presi dential campaign four years ago. Brannan also brought forth the '"Brannan Plan" for farm subsidy payments, but Congress never approved it. Although he is governor of one of the richest farm states. Stevenson Tias not built himself farm legislation. He has indi cated approval of the govern ment price support program. Riverside Phone 3-2951 Bids on Public Domain Timber Due August 19 Tracts of public domain tim ber to be offered for sale during August and the stumpage sold from O 8c C lands in July were announced today by Rorcoe Bell, regional administrator of the Bureau of Land Manage ment. Eight parcels of timber total ling 17,216,000 board feet on public domain lands in three states will be placed on the block on August 19. Three parcels in the Medford district, totalling 3,845,000 board feet, including 15,350 linear feet of western red cedar poles, will go on sale August 19. One will be by oral bid and two will be by sealed bid. The tracts are in Jackson and Douglas counties. The district forester at Bend will offer for sale 6,235,000 board feet in two tracts on Au gust 19. The timber is in De schutes and Crook counties. Bell also reported that 32, 224,000 board feet of O & C timber, including . 6,140 linear feet of pilings were sold during July for $823,562.50, which was 29 per cent above the appraised price. The buyers included Johnston & Hise, Medford. plank in the Democratic party platform "very much" but he did not amplify. The farm plank applauded the action of Congress this year in temporarily setting price sup ports at 90 per cent of parity on basic crops instead of the slid ing scale formulas in effect for the past four years. Eisenhower will fly to Los Ange les Tuesday to make his first speech since winning the Repub lican presidential nomination. His associates said the speech, to . be delivered Tuesday night before the 53rd annual encamp ment of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, would be non-political in nature. To Receive Award But it was apparent that any thing the GOP nominee says will be construed as having political significance. The VFW will award Eisen hower its first annual Bernard M. Baruch Medal. This award is to be presented each year to the person who "has made the great est contribution to the cause of American unity and world peace." Eisenhower's brief speech will be in response to this presenta tion. To Return to Denver After delivering his speech, Eisenhower will fly directly back to Denver. The former five-star general got a taste Monday of some of the tough political problems that lie ahead of him in his presi dential campaign.. A group of Negro' leaders headed by Bishop D. Ward Nich ols of the First District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church of New York, came here to discuss civil rights problems with Eisenhower. Not on Record The GOP nominee refused to put himself on record as favor ing a compulsory Federal Fair Employment Practices Commis sion. He had taken that same po sition prior to his presidential nomination. Despite this fact, Nichols and the other five mem bers of the Negro group said they were "convinced that the election of Eisenhower in No vember will greatly advance civil rights progress in Amer ica." Man in Woman's Clothes Found Dead Vancouver, Wash. (U.R)- Law-enforcement officers Tues day investigated the death of a Clark county man found fully dressed in woman's clothes hanging from a willow sapling thre miles east of Washougal, Wash. ; The body, that of William Carroll, 36, a logger living with his wife and two sons at Wash ougal, Wash., was discovered by William Carroll Jr., 16, one of the sons, and Joe Kennedy, 17, Sunday night. Hasty, farm labor representative of the state employment service. The opening of the office is an annual custom in Medford and is set up to handle the increased farm labor need during the sum mer harvest season. The farm labor office is a branch of the Oregon employment service and all farm labor information for every type of help will be handl ed through the new. office in stead of the employment service in the Holland hotel building. The seasonal office is located next to the Bible auditorium on South Central avenue. Office hours beginning next Monday will be 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 6 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday. The office can be reached by phoning 2-8033. Girl Regains Sight; World Terrifying Walney, England (U.R) J Hornby, her sight restored after being blind for 17 of her 18 years, found the world a fright ening place Tuesday. "The first horse I saw terri fied me," she confessed. "And aren't houses big! ' "I was horrified when I saw my first double-decker bus. It seemed o be coming straight at me. "That fried egg for breakfast looked horrible. I couldn't eat it. And the Swiss roll at teatime was revolting." The 14 $100 bills and one $10 bill were unheard from until Monday when an official of the state unemployment office at Salem informed that motor firm that the money all of it arrived and would be returned to the firm. Measles Lead List of Communicable Diseases Eleven cases of communicable diseases were reported in Jack son county for the week ending August 2, according to a report released today by the . Jackson county health department. Red measles led the list with five cases, three in Medford and two in Rogue River. In addition there were three cases of influ enza in Medford, two cases of chicken pox in Jacksonville, and one case of mumps in Medford, the report stated.
