Oregon Road Tax Legislation
To Be Debated at Astoria Friday

the fight on one of the most con
troversial problems facing the
voters of Oregon when State
Sen. Elmo Smith, John Day, de
bates Oregon road tax legisla
tion before the Astoria Chamber
of Commerce Friday noon with
representatives of the trucking
Industry.
Withstood Pressure
Smith, as chairman of the
Senate Highways Committee in
the 1951 legislature, withstood
one of the bitterest pressure
campaigns in Oregon legislative
history to guide the truck tax
measure to successful passage.

He has been doing exhaustive
research - in the meantime as
chairman of the legislative High
way Interim Committee and is
expected to throw some fair
sized thunderbolts at the array
of talent the truckers are expect
ed to present at the Astoria
meeting.
The John Day Republican
said: "I am convinced the out-of-state
truck interests have de
liberately set out to beat Ore
gon's truck laws regardless of
consequences, and they are
ready to use any tactics or pres
sure that will create misunder
standing in the minds of the
Oregon voters. They are now us
ing on the voters the tricks that
they used previously on the
legislature for the purpose of
evading fair taxes.
Tax Hoax Seen
"The big interstate operators
are evidently purpetrating a
first-rate tax hoax on the Ore-gon-owned-and-operated
trucks.
If successful, it will run many of
the small and medium sized
truckers, the private commer
cial truckers and others out of
business, and seriously cripple
the log truck operators.

Statewide Attention Seen
The Astoria meeting is ex
pected to attract statewide at
tention. It is the first public de
bate between a representative of
the public and the trucking in
dustry. Observers said it may
forecast some of the tactics to be
used by both sides before the
voters cast their opinions at the
November election on the legis
lative truck tax measure, which
the truckers have referred to a
vote of the people and the con
stitutional amendment which
the truckers have initiated.
The constitutional amend
ment would eliminate the ton
mile tax which would shift a
share of road cost to big truck
ers to small truckers and auto
owners, those opposed to it say.

meet Thursday at 8 p.m.
HEC held a pot-luck picnic at
the home of Mrs. Clyde Stur-
gill with Mrs. Joe McKnight as
co-hostess. Forty-five members
and friends attended. Mr. and
Mrs. Jake Brown from Eagle
Point were guests. The Sturgills
showed motion pictures which
they had recently taken.
Sams Valley Grange
Sams Valley Grange met July
18 with Master Ralph James
presiding. Albert Straus, report
ing on agriculture, stated that
the late June freeze had serious
ly damaged the alta fescue seed
crops. He also said barley was
selling for $60. and oats $65 a
ton in the field, wheat quota
tions about $72 a ton. There
had been an increase in the price
of hay due to the rains.

Heater reported that the road

HEC is trying to get a group
organized to clean up the grass
and weeds around the Grange
hall to reduce the fire hazard.
HEC will meet next with Mrs.
Gerald Fitzgerald as hostess.
Visitors were Mr. and Mrs.
C. R. McClintock from Rogue
River Grange.'
Lecture hour was made up of
humorous skits and a talk by
Gilbert Mack on the recent con
servation workshop held at
SOC.
The refreshment committee
was made up of Mr. and Mrs.
Lindsey Houston and Mr. and
Mrs. Clifford Heater.
Next Grange meeting will be
on August 16.

on candidates who due to a mis

and sandwiches are to be

be conferred at the next regul
lar meeting night, August 7. Wil
lie McLean asked all tableaux
members to be present, as there
will be no practice for either
degree tarns at these two initi
ation nights.
