Communist truce negotia tors in Korea at long last seemed in the mood to compromise their ' demand for forced repatriation of all war- prisoners the sole issue blocking an armistice. Red China's belated acceptance of the Geneva Convention on wj r prisoners indicated the Commu nists might propose that prison ers be placed in custody of a neutral power and their disposi tion settled after a cease-fire. 2. Iran's ultra-nationalist pre mier, Mohammed Mossadegh, who seized the Iranian proper ties of the British-owned Anglo- Iranian company and brought his country to the brink of bank ruptcy, resigned. In his place, the Shah appointed Ahmed Qa vam, who as premier in 1946 .forced Russia to withdraw her troops from Iran. Qavam in the past has favored foreign invest ment in Iran and his return to the premiership may clear the way for a settlement of the Anglo-Iranian oil dispute. Jets Fly to Japan 3. Fifty-eight American Thun derjet fighter-bombers proved, in words of their commander, that they can "go anywhere, any time, and in any numbers" by flying 11,000 miles in 12 days from Turner Air Base, Albany, Ga., to Japan. BAD NEWS 1. Both the British govern ment and the Church of England confessed themselves powerless to gag or oust Dr Hewlett John son as dean of Canterbury Cathe dral for spouting Communist propaganda. Prime Minister Win ston Churchill and the arch bishop of Canterbury explained that Johnson had not broken any law and had not committed heresy. Only 24 hours later, the dean made another speech' echo ing the Communist propaganda charge that the U. S. is waging germ warfare in Korea. Foreign Policy Cracks 2. Britain's 12-year-old biparti san foreign policy cracked wide open. Labor members of Com mons announced they would vote against any ratification at this time of the separate West Ger man peace treaty signed by' Brit 4-H Club News Eagle Pint Canners The Eagle Point Canning club met July 16 at the home of Lois Farlow, president. The evening was spent discussing canning problems. Mrs. Wilford Davies, club lead er, invited us to her home for the next meeting, to be held July 21, at 2 p. m. She will demon strate jelly making. Swedish Proposal Rejected 3. Russia rejected a Swedish proposal to let the World Court investigate and decide whether, as Sweden claimed, Soviet jet fighters shot down an unarmed Swedish flying boat over inter national waters of the Baltic Sea last month. The Soviet note said the Swedish version of the in cident was "devoid of all foun dation." Russia has admitted the Soviet fighter planes fired on a Swedish flying boat, but insisted they did so only after the air craft flew over Soviet territory and refused orders to land. Runaway Grants Pass Boys Picked Up After Theft of Cars, Boats Grafts Pass State police ar- rested two 14-year-old boys this week after a series of adventures and misadventures they went through as "runaways." Their ac tivities included: Theft of an automobile from a used car lot, which they aban doned in the Applegate after a tire blew out. Theft of another automobile from its Applegate owner, which they drove to Prospect and back to Grants Pass, finally abandon ing it. Theft of a boat in Grants Pass, which they took down-river. where they found "a raft. They abandoned the ' boat and stole the raft, which was of lumber with two airplane wing tanks. The raft collapsed, dumping the boys in the river. They es caped,, but lost bedrolls, stolen guns and other equipment. They made their way to the Galice ranger station, where they were picked up by police. -V 4 Hit SW&L PLENTY of attractions, Includ ing pageant, rodeo, horse and livestock show, stock and farm exhibits are promised by pert Barbara Stuart at Contra Costa County Fair, Antioch, Cal., July 31 to August '3. Arvey, who strode up the Avenue with Barkley on the five-block walk to the Conrad- Hilton Hotel.- Barkley told newsmen that his campaign "looks very good, from all I understand." He said he was "confident of victory." Asked on what ballot he ex pects to -win the Democratic presidential nomination, Bark ley quipped: . "Any old ballot will suit me." Smiling and waving cheerily, Barkley swung up the Avenue as marching Kentucky partisans sang "My Old Kentucky Home." "I used to walk h this same route when I didn't have the price of a taxi," Barkley re marked. "Of course that was during a Republican administra tion." Kentucky Governor Walking abreast with Barkley were his wife, Arvey, Gov. and Mrs. Lawrence Wetherby of Kentucky, and Cook County, 111., Commissioner Arthur El rod. Elrod, a pledged Barkley delegate from Illinois, and Sen ate Secretary Leslie L. Biffle boarded, the train at the Engle wood station on Chicago's South Side and rode into, the main de pot with the "Veep." Arvey -said he expected to confer with Barkley again later today. But he would not com ment on the chances that he may 'India for Veep' Campaign Gets Underway in Chicago Chicago (U.R) Volunteer workers at the newly-opened "India for Veep" headquarters were busy Friday ordering cam paign ribbons aid handbills to boom Mrs. India Edwards for vice president. Backers of the vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee went to work at the Conrad Hilton Hotel buttonhol ing delegates for their support. 39 States Back India Mrs. Mary T. Norton, former Democratic, congresswoman from New Jersey, who with Mrs. Julia Crews, prominent New York Democrat, originated the move in June, is due to ar rive Saturday. "Their proposal now has organized backing in 39 states.. "We are " verv serious about Legion Commander Named Delegate Head Commander Hugh Williams of Medford Legion Post 15 was elected chairman of the Medford delegation to the American Le gion state convention during a dinner meeting of delegates and alternates this week. The convention will be held July 25 to 30 in Klamath Falls. In his acceptance speech, Wil liams urged rapid payment of 1953 dues. Adjutant Roy Stoy said new membership cards should be ready for delivery by the end of this week. After a short .talk on the state convention by Leo Williams, vice-chairman Ralph Ettel re ported on the success of the Boys State conclave at Salem.
