July 15. 19" Oregon's Visitors Write Appreciative Comments in Book By WILLIAM WARREN Salem (U.R) This state of Oregon is, to thousands of vis itors from other states and sev eral foreign countries, a state of happiness. You will find the proof in the large register atop the tourist in formation desk on the first floor of the capitol where James Mc Gilchrist, veteran capitol guide, and his two whistle inspiring aides, Mary Louise Lee and Sal ly Jo Grimm, hold forth. Capitol Swarming . The capitol is swarming these days with visitors, and Jim, as McGilchrist is known to every one, and Mary Louise and Sally Jo conduct some 20 tours a day from the ground floor rotunda with its beautiful murals to the top of the tall dome where stands the Golden Pioneer with his axe. You see the Salem country from the Cascades to the Coast Range on clear days when you visit the Hnlrien Pioneer. ? And what do tourists think of the capitol and of the state it rpnresents? Give a look at the resister: fmm a Michiean euest: "Our first trip here. The beauty is un believable. Enjoyed every min ute. Everyone very friendly." From a Texan: "Oregon, a land of beauty." And from a Californian yet: "Incomparable." From Nicaragua came this Latin neighborly observation: "Beautiful beyond words." Likes Murals A visitor from Vancouver, B. C, noted the striking rotunda ' and wrote: "Lovely murals." The tour is made doubly en joyable, tourists say, by the friendly attention of Jim and his two eyeful aides. Mary J-.ouise Lee graduated from Willamette university last June and Sally Jo Grimm will be a sophomore thpri in the fall. One tourist evidently hadn't been here since the old capitol burned in 1935. She wrote: "All naw to me. Was here when the old building was up. A beautiful building." And this from Los Angeles: "This is one of the most beau tiful capitols in the Union. Another tourist wrote: "Try and beat it. And still another "It's a nicey." But from Kentucky came this sauelcher: 'Fair-to-middlin,' Not as pur- ty as the salt flats.' PAPER NOT KIDDING Battle Creek. Mich. (U.R) This city's only daily newspap er, the Battle Creek Enquirer and News, headlined a page-one story, "Mercury Drops to 27 Year-Low" on one of the . hot test days of the year. The paper had an explanation, however. A fine-print note said, 'Reprinted Bear cubs are surprisingly for your pleasure from the Dec. small at birth, being about eight 17, 1951, edition of the Enquirer inches long and weighing from and News. nine to 12 ounces 4-H'ers Planning Camp May Register All .4-H club members in Jack son county who wish to attend Camp Greyback, July 28 to Aug ust 2, are urged to file their ap plications in the county agent's office by July 16, according to R. H. Cate Jr., county agent in 4-H work. Any club member who has his work up to date may attend, the agent said, with the cost being S10.50 for camp tuition, plus transportation if the bus is used. Bus fare, will be $3.50 for a round trip with buses leaving the courthouse at 8:15 a.m. on July 28, with a stop at Rogue River at 9:15. Activities at the camp will in clude swimming, hiking, natural crafts, cook outs, a ' sleep out, and others, the agent noted. For Recreation Co-directors for the camp will be Miss Eula Wintermote, home economics agent, and Cate. The latter described the camp as be ing primarily for recreation, giv ing the members a chance to re lax with sueh things as crafts, nature studies and swimming. A health examination will be required of all attendants and may be obtained July 24 and 25 from the county health physi cian in the courthouse, or from a private physician. The theme of this year's camp will be "Let's Go Western," with cowboy dress in order. Further information about the camp may be obtained at the county agent's office. State Department Calls for China Probe Washington (U.R) The State Department said Monday it has called for an investiga tion into Chinese embassy mes sages which allegedly revealed a plot to steal U. S. atomic sec rets. It said the Justice Depart ment has agreed, at its request, to try to determine whether the cables actually were sent by the embassy or whether they were forgeries.. Spokesman Lincoln White said the department revealed its action in a letter Undersecre tary of State David Bruce sent Sen. Wayne Morse, (R-Ore.), on June 24. Morse introduced the messag es into the Congressional Record recently and in a letter June 9 asked the state Department to decide whether they were auth entic. White said the Justice De partment would make hand writing comparisons in attempt to identify the authors of the messages. He emphasized, how ever, that the check would be restricted to this question . and would not include a look into the so-called China lobby. .
