(U.R) Last October 2,000 persons signed a petition asking that a hometown boy, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhow er, be their candidate for pres ident. , They have been working en ergetically ever since to bolster boomlet, which became an avalanche at the Republican Na tional convention Friday. Printed First Petition Henry B. Jameson, an Abil ene newspaperman who as a war correspondent had known Eisenhower in Europe, printed that first petition. In two days, on Oct. 15-16, 1951, 2,000 of the 6,000 persons in Abilene signed. A week later the list grew to 10,000 names of persons in Dickinson county. The plea was mailed to Eis enhower in Paris, where he was commanding - United Nations forces in Europe. Jameson's ' petition said: Best Qualified "We believe you are the best qualified man for the job of President of the United States, and we petition and urge of you to make yourself a Republican candidate for President." Democrats and Republicans alike then wrote, wired and tele phoned Jameson from all over America, he said. A woman in didate who will command the support of both the Northern and Southern factions of their party, the chances of a Republi can victory in November can be regarded as fairly birght. In New York, a Citizens for Eisenhower committee helped carry the ball when the Topeka Abilene team asked for relief. Henry Jameson and Abil ene were not surprised at the outcome Friday at Chicago. A roaring, impromptu celebration splashed into the main streets of Abilene the minute Eisenhow er won the nomination. The department said the high yielding hybrids were planted on five out of every six acres this year, compared to one acre in 1,000 in 1933. It said 70,366, 000 of the total corn acreage of 83,369,000 acres were in hy brid. - The department said hybrid corn, which has already made a virtual sweep of the Corn Belt, is continuing to pick up popular ity in other parts oaf the coun try. Use Mail Tribune Want Ads Craterian Theater Schedules Opening The ''new" Craterian theater will have its official opening on Wednesday, July 30, at 8 p.m., it was announced today. One half the amount paid for each ticket will go to the Med ford Elks lodge for its summer camp for underprivileged young sters. Robert Corbin, manager for Lippert theaters here, is at tempting to secure the film, "The Will Rogers Story," for a special showing for the opening and dedication. Renovations at the theater have been under-way for some time. Tickets will go on sale this week at The Toggery, Barker's Men's store, Hubbard Brothers hardware store, Weeks and Orr and the Craterian theater. A ticket guarantees a seat, it was pointed out.
