Funds from past Jubilees have gone into a new roof of the hotel m an effort to preserve xne building. - Gold Rush Jubilee Plans Now Under Way Jacksonville Preparations for the fifth annual Gold Rush Jubilee to be held August 2 and 3 are now in high gear in Jack sonville, according to P. E. (Scotty) Matheny, general chair man. , Matheny pointed out that the Jubilee is now becoming one of the "musts" for tourists on the west coast and is benefiting all of southern Oregon in increased tourist business. He stressed the idea that the celebration is no longer local in scope. "Although it is sponsored by the Jackson ville Lions club, its past and con tinuing success remains with the assistance given by the Jubilee's business, fraternal and organi zation friends throughout the Rogue river valley," the chair man continued. Funds for Improvements Funds from the past four Jubi lees have gone for civic and his toric improvement, Matheny noted. Such projects have been a new roofing for the U. S. hotel, a $15,000 Community hall, two public rest rooms and new foot ball uniforms for the high school. The money to be received from the coming festival is earmarked for night lights, new sodding and a grandstand for the high school football field. "Every effort is being made this year," the chairman said, "to bring new innovations to the affair as well as the popular events of the past Jubilees." One of the featured attractions of the celebration will be "a unique one the first of its kind," ac cording to Matheny, referring to the Burro derby. It is hoped to perform this on the quarter mile oval at the high school with four races on Saturday, August 2, and Sunday races featuring a sweepstakes finale for all race winners. Prizes will be awarded for win, place and show. Matheny pointed out the im portance of the burro to the be ginnings of Jacksonville when it was the principal pack-animal for the prospector in the early quest for gold and stated that the Burro derby would continue the memory of this hardy ani mal in the city's history. Other highlights of the two day festival will be treasure hunts for real gold, parade, se lection of . a queen, log bucking contests, pageant, Old Fiddlers' contest, art exhibit, dancing, archery and pistol contests and barbershop quartet singing. Prizes for the popular queen's contest, which is based on the most tickets sold, will be a $300 wardrobe for first, $200 for sec ond and $100, third purchases to be made at Mann's depart ment store. Each contestant will also receive a formal gown to wear during the festivities which she may keep, and weekly prizes will be given for the candidate selling the most tickets up to the end of the contest. Parade Prizes Prizes will also be offered for parade entries in two groups: float and group or riding organ ization. In both divisions, first prize will be $25 and second, $15.
