(See Story Page 1) Beaver Stale Boys Speakers for Lions Three Medford boys who at tended the 1952 Beaver Boys State convention at Willamette university, Salem, were guest speakers for the Medford Lions club meeting Wednesday at the Jackson hotel. Tommy Gail, Lojuis Bright and Darrell Brittsan told the Lions' their experiences at the convention. This was the first year Boys State was held at Wil lamette. The Lions expressed pleasure with the experience the boys gained. They are getting a bet ter understanding of the prin ciples and functions of our gov ernment on municipal, county and state levels, it was said. Thirty-nine-year-old Sen. Rich ard M. Nixon held a midnight press conference in his hotel room after getting the Republi can bid to serve notice on the Democrats and Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower that they're going to see something new in veeps when he hits the campaign trail. Just Two Issues The Californian said that as far as he is concerned, there are only two .issues "the Tru man record" and" "Communism at home and abroad." On those issues, and with Eisenhower at the head of the ticket, he said, "We can defeat any Democratic candidate." "Because," he added, "regard less of who he is, he will be a Truman - named, Truman - con trolled candidate." Stuck With HST Record "Any Democratic candidate will be stuck with the Truman record, and that gives us our issue." As soon as the GOP conven tion formally nominated him Friday night, Nixon hustled over to Eisenhower's headquarters to talk over the strategy they will follow in the election campaign Wilson Executions Cleared by Court San Francisco (U.R) The Ninth U.S. Court of Appeals in effect has cleared the way for the execution of Turman G. Wil son, 25, and his brother, Utah E Wilson, 21, for the 1950 kidnap- slaying of Jo Ann Dewey, 18, of Meadowglade, Wash. The court Thursday lifted its stay preventing the execution in the Washington state peniten tiary at Walla Walla. At the same time the court denied an appeal to bring a petition for re lease before the court. The petition previously had been denied by Federal Judge Samuel M. Driver at Spokane. The brothers were scheduled to die June 23, but a stay of exe cution was granted while the court reviewed their case. Next step in the case will be return of the brothers to Van couver, Wash., where, for the fourth time, an execution date will be set. Accident Costs High At Salem Crossings Salem (U.R) Railroad grade crossing accidents in Salem have cost half a million dollars in the last 10 years, the Salem League of Women Voters said Saturday. The league has made a detail ed study of accidents. It said replies to a questionnaire from participants in 274 of the 542 recorded grade crossing acci dents showed property damage in those accidents at $112,500. Another $304,000 was listed as the actual cost in 16 fatal acci dents, including insurance paid to beneficiaries. In figuring the dollar costs of accidents, the league consider ed vehicle repairs, cargo and clothing damage, towing charges, working time lost, attorney, doc tor, nurse, medical and hospital expenses. Cloud-Seeders In Air Friday Afternoon Cloud-seeding planes were in the air for 2 hours 27 minutes Friday afternoon, working on a threatening thunderhead forma tion over the Greensprings and Siskiyou summit areas, it was reported by the fliers Saturday. The hail-threatening forma tions extended to about Ashland on the north, but might have come into the valley unless seed ed, the pilots explained. Tops of the formation were around Z5, 000 feet, and heavy rains were reported in the mountain areas following the seeding flights About one hour was devoted to actual seeding, with the rest of the flights made for observation. The pilots are under contract to the Rogue River Valley Traf fic association to seed the clouds in attempts to prevent hail, which damages the valley's pear crop. than their predecessors ta ap proach th problems of govern ment because of such experi ences. - " between now and November. Shot lo Prominence Nixon, who wasn't even a dele gate to his party's convention in 1948, skyrocketed to national prominence as a Communist- hunter. He did it without getting the "witch-hunter" tag pinned on many of his congressional colleagues. As a member of the House Un-American Activities Commit tee, he hammered away at the case of State Department offi cial Alger Hiss for months after the rest of the committee and the general public lost all in terest in the affair. President Truman unwittingly gave Nixon a helping hand by ridiculing his Communist hunt as a "red herring" phrase that came back to haunt the Presi dent when the Californian final ly bagged Hiss. Broke Hiss Case Nixon broke the Hiss case wide open one night in 1948, when V.'hittaker Chambers led him to a pumpkin patch behind the Chambers' Maryland farm home and showed him a cache of docu ments linking Hiss to a Com munist network in the federal government. Those documents eventually landed Hiss in a federal prison for perjury. Nixon broke into politics six years ago when he spotted an advertisement placed in a Cali fornia ' newspaper by a citizens' committee. The ad called for a candidate to run against vet eran Democratic Rep. Jerry Voorhis in California's 12th Dis trict. Defeated Voorhis Nixon answered the ad, took on Voorhis in a series of Lincoln-Douglas style debates, and won the election. The national publicity he won on the Hiss case carried' him into the Senate in 1950 after a bitter campaign against actress-politician Helen Gtihagan Douglas. Born Jan. 9, 1913, in Yerba Linda, Calif., near Los Angeles, Nixon now has his permanent home in Whittier, a Quaker colony which 'also is close to the movie capital. He and his attractive wife, the former Pa tricia Ryan, spend most of the year with their two young daughters, Patricia and Julie, in a modest home in Washington. A graduate of Whittier Col lege, he received a law degree from Duke University in 1937 and was practicing law in Whit tier when he joined the Navy during World War II. 1 W JOHN MOFFAT Elected Director Portland Jewelry Store Victim of $20,000 Burglary Portland (U.R) Burglars seized wrist watches, rings and other jewelry valued at more than $20,000 Saturday from Ber nard's Jewelry store in down town Portland. Detective said the yeggmen forced a basement door in the nearby Milner hotel, gained ac cess to the Portland Beauty Ac ademy and then forced their way into the basement of the jewelry store. Morris Rogoway, one -of the partners in the store, said an inventory would have to be tak en to determine the exact loss. He said a display case contain ing more than 300 stone-set rings and another display case with men's wrist watches were cleaned out. Officers called it a "well-planned job." The jewelry robbery was the second major burglary in the Portland area in 24 hours and climaxed a series of lesser jobs over the last week, police said. On Friday morning, burglars shattered a safe in the Shamrock Shopping center and took about $1500. It, too, was described as a "well-planned job" because the establishment was protected by a burglar alarm system. Police said the yeggs avoided it by bor ing a hole in the roof to gain entrance. Another burglary was report ed in the St. John's district where more than $500 was tak en from a safe in Slim's tav ern. - Sunday, July IS, 1SS2 MEDFORD (OREGOH) MAIL TRIBUNE FIVE Three Navy Men Killed In Patrol Bomber Crash Seattle (U.R) Three men were killed and four others es caped serious injury Friday in the crash of their Navy PBY Catalina patrol bomber at the Sand Point Naval Air Station. The aircraft was on a routine flight and crashed during land ing procedures at the field. Navy officials said names of the dead crewmen and the four survivors, all of whom were reservists on temporary Cuty, are being withheld pending no tification of next of kin. Moffat, manager of Mann's department store, was elected last week to fill the un expired term of the late John C.-Mann as director of the Jack son County Federal Savings and Loan association. U.R) Nine teen members of a high school driver training class were asked to make a survey of how well adult drivers observed the laws and rules of safety. They re ported 700 violations observed during the 40-minute class sur vey. Failure to give hand signals when stopping or making a turn led the list. Drunken Driving Trial Postponed to Saturday Trial Jn city police court for Samuel Charles Reed, salesman from Klamath Falls, was reset for next Saturday morning, ac cording to Judge Warren Les seg, before whom Reed appear ed Friday. Reed was arrested June 21 for driving under the influence of liquor, police records show. Reed's attorney is O. H. Bengt-son. Cecil Ray Willis has been bound over to a federal grand jury under $1000 bail on a charge of viola tion of the Dyer act. Willis, arrested at Medford, is accused of driving a stolen car from Memphis, Tenn., to Phoe nix, Ore. The Dyer act makes transportation of stolen cars across state lines a federal of fense. Willis was picked up by state police at Phoenix when he ran into the rear of another vehicle on July 1 and was held in the county jail until Friday for grand larceny, according to police.
