EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday. July 2, 1952 Medford Man Doing Atomic Research Charles Ben Wharton, Med ford high school graduate of 1944 and son of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. "Wharton, 1134 West Ninth street, is now employed as an engineer physicist doing basic and applied research in atomic physics at the University of California radia tion laboratories. Wharton received a master of science degree, cum laude, last month from the university, his parents reported. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Univer sity of California in 1950. In recent electrical engineer ing competition at Stanford uni versity, Wharton won first place with his paper on "Field Emis sion of Electrons." Washington (U.R) The comp troller of currency today issued a call for the condition of all National banks as of June 30. Stolen Car Driver Arrested by Police Cecil Ray Willis, 23, of Mem phis, Term., was arrested and jailed by state police yesterday. He is being held tor Tennessee authorities, and police said he was arrested while driving a stolen car. He is on parole from Texas on burglary charges. Police arrested Willis follow ing a minor accident hear Phoe nix, when the car he was driving struck a truck. . OWNS RARE AUTO RELIC Pawtucket, R. I. (U.R) Philip Rattie believes he owns the only existing Cameron au tomobile. The car, the 13th of some 1,800 built here between 1902 and 1906, originally was bought by Rattie's father. It has a canopy-style top with side cur tains, a fluted hood with wind scoops to cool the motor and flat wooden fenders. Indian Bureau's Handling of Sales To Be Investigated Washington (U.R) The Bureau of Indian Affairs hand ling of trust land sales and leas es in Oregon was due Wednesday for an investigation by a con gressional committee. The House of Representatives Tuesday adopted by a voice vote a resolution by Rep. Harris Ells worth, directing the interior and insular affairs committee to un dertake the investigation. Although the resolution is ef fective immediately, Committee Chairman John R. Murdock, CD Ariz.) said he was not certain whether the committee has ade quate funds to undertake the Oregon investigation and t w o others directed at the Indian bureau. The Oregon Republican's reso lution was inspired by a federal suit pending in Portland to void the sale of 800 acres of Indian trust lands. The action was brought by the federal govern ment and charged fraud was committed in making the In dian bureau approved sale. Maple Park Water District Voters Approve Bond Issue An election held June 30, to authorize a bond issue for con struction of water facilities for the new Maple Park Water dis trict, resulted in a vote of 116 for the bonds and 1 against, it was reported today by the board of directors. The board met last night to canvass the vote. The bond issue authorized to taled $26,000, and the directors last night took advantage of their legal right td levy not more than 2 per cent of the as sessed valuation of the district, and increased the issue to $27,- 500, which they determined will be needed to bring Medford wa ter to residents of the district. The bonds will be 30-year doc uments, carrying not more than 5 per cent interest. They will be issued and sold during the sum mer, and the directors hope that bids can be called and construc tion started on the water system by early fall. To Begin Collections The board also authorized the district's treasurer, B. T. Green, to begin collecting connection fees from district residents who will be among the first to re ceive the water services. Initial steps to prepare a tax levy, to ' become effective in November, were also taken by the board, which passed a resa lution asking the county assess- or for an extension of time, to complete preliminary work. A budget committee was appointed and will meet July 7 to work out the district budget. A public hearing for district residents will be held July 30. ; The tax levy will be to retire the bonds, and, with other in come, to pay operating expenses. PLASTER IRRITATES ULCER Chicago (U.R) David Roth- stein filed a $10,000 damage suit against his landlord for injuries allegedly suffered when ceiling plaster fell on him while Roth- stein was taking a bath. He said it irritated his ulcer. A-STRIKE DELAYED Oak Ridge, Term. (U.R) The President's atomic relations pan el Wednesday held off a threat ened strike that would halt pro duction of uranium for A-bombs at the world's biggest non-stop plant. Falls City, Neb. (U.R) It costs about as much for a child's haircut here as it does to shear a sheep. Sheep shearing is $1 a head and children's haircuts are priced at 75 cents but - edging toward the dollar mark. Woman Arrested, Jailed After Highway Accident Mrs. lona Lea Bray, 39, route 1, box 3, Eagle Point, was ar rested late Tuesday by state po lice, after the car which she was driving went out of control, skidded on gravel and hit a cul vert, officers said today. She was jailed and faces charges of being drunk on a pub lich highway, police reported. The accident happened on the Crater Lake highway.
