Indian Bureau's
Handling of Sales
To Be Investigated
Washington (U.R) The
Bureau of Indian Affairs hand
ling of trust land sales and leas
es in Oregon was due Wednesday
for an investigation by a con
gressional committee.
The House of Representatives
Tuesday adopted by a voice vote
a resolution by Rep. Harris Ells
worth, directing the interior and
insular affairs committee to un
dertake the investigation.
Although the resolution is ef
fective immediately, Committee
Chairman John R. Murdock, CD
Ariz.) said he was not certain
whether the committee has ade
quate funds to undertake the
Oregon investigation and t w o
others directed at the Indian
bureau.
The Oregon Republican's reso
lution was inspired by a federal
suit pending in Portland to void
the sale of 800 acres of Indian
trust lands. The action was
brought by the federal govern
ment and charged fraud was
committed in making the In
dian bureau approved sale.
Maple Park Water
District Voters
Approve Bond Issue
An election held June 30, to
authorize a bond issue for con
struction of water facilities for
the new Maple Park Water dis
trict, resulted in a vote of 116
for the bonds and 1 against, it
was reported today by the board
of directors.
The board met last night to
canvass the vote.
The bond issue authorized to
taled $26,000, and the directors
last night took advantage of
their legal right td levy not
more than 2 per cent of the as
sessed valuation of the district,
and increased the issue to $27,-
500, which they determined will
be needed to bring Medford wa
ter to residents of the district.
The bonds will be 30-year doc
uments, carrying not more than
5 per cent interest. They will be
issued and sold during the sum
mer, and the directors hope that
bids can be called and construc
tion started on the water system
by early fall.
To Begin Collections
The board also authorized the
district's treasurer, B. T. Green,
to begin collecting connection
fees from district residents who
will be among the first to re
ceive the water services.
Initial steps to prepare a tax
levy, to ' become effective in
November, were also taken by
the board, which passed a resa
lution asking the county assess-
or for an extension of time, to
complete preliminary work. A
budget committee was appointed
and will meet July 7 to work
out the district budget. A public
hearing for district residents
will be held July 30. ;
The tax levy will be to retire
the bonds, and, with other in
come, to pay operating expenses.
