A rela tive said the child "was in good health and had not suffered any major illness prior to his sudden death. I obtained that informa tion from a newspaper report published May 15. I wonder why the doctor deemed it necessary to subject the child to a major operation if the child was in good health. Another newspaper report published May 22 tells of the death of a young woman "while having her tonsils removed un der anesthesia in the operating room at Hospital." The medical examiner stated official ly that the young woman's death was accidental and no one was to blame. Having done so he paradoxed that "the cause of death was difficult to determine without an autopsy." Now I wonder why the doctor who advised the operation thought an attempt to "get all the tonsil" was justified. But then, I think tonsillectomy is on ly rarely warranted anyway. The familiar argument of the ever ready operator, that it is necessary to "get all the tonsil" that is, the operator must leave no tonsil tissue in the throat is absurd. The truth is that more or less tonsil tissue re mains in the throat after "com plete" tonsillectomy, no matter As We Live LEGIONNAIRE NEGLECTS HOME AND FAMILY FOR LODGE LIFE Every adult should show an Interest in the social and civic life of his community. As far as possible he should make some contribution to the different or ganizations of the community, . in work or money or both. But, there is a limit to which his con tributions should go. The man described here has certainly - gone far beyond: "My husband is 17 years my senior. Well, that doesn't both er me but he is the head of an organization that is very nice to a certain extent. But he just lives 'Legion.' No matter what I want done around the house or what our 7-year-old daugh ter wants her daddy to do, the Legion must come first, last, and always. He usually says 1 have a meeting, and is gone for hours. He takes the car so I have to stay at home. I be long to the Ladies Auxiliary, but can't go as I have to stay at home with our daughter. I have put up with this for seven years and now am at the end of my" rope." Your husband's work for the Legion is commendable but he has carried it too far. Surely there must be other men in it who can share some of the re sponsibilities for its work. As head of it of course, h e must preside over the meet ings. But I am sure they do not have daily meetings. Why not put your foot down firmly and insist that he assume his duties as husband and father as well as head of the Legion? If he refuses to do this, hire someone to do the jobs around the house that a husband gener ally does. After he has paid a few bills for such work, he may decide that it would be wiser to do them himself. As for the Ladies Auxiliary you should not give up the fun and recreation. Hire someone to stay with your daughter so you can go to the important meetings or tne parties. This you are en. titled to, just as your husband feels that he is entitled to at tend as many of the Lodge meet tags as he wishes. T - , - necause your nusoana is so much older than you, he may find family life with a young cniid less Interesting than he would if he were younger. But that does not free him from his marital responsibilities. See that he fulfills them. If you have a problem about family or friend, ask Dr. Hux lock to help you. Write ia care of this newspaper. DOCTORS who the surgeon may be. If I'm wrong about this isn't it the duty of the ever' ready operators to correct me? My advice to people who are being urged to undergo the ma jor operation called tonsillec tomy or to subject their children to "complete removal" of tonsils is as follows: 1. Wait a bit. Don't be rushed into the hospital. Take time to think it over. There is no emergency. 2. Children are likely to have very . large tonsils in the spring and by the time school opens in the autumn if some eager surgeon hasn't gotten them the tonsils will have shrunk to ordinary size. 3. Where ear trouble or dulled hearing is ascribed to enlarged tonsils . andor adenoids, a series of same, painless X-ray or radium emanation treat ments will probably give as good results as ah operation. 4. If enlarged tonsils obstruct the breathing passages instantan eous tonsillotomy is as effec tive as the attempt to "get all the tonsil" and far safer. 5. The treatment of infected ton sils by diathermy (electro coagulation) by a physician skilled in this difficult tech nique, is at least as effective and far safer than tonsillectomy. Terms for Larceny Glen (Buster) Jones, 20, Cra ter Lake highway, and a 15- year-old boy were sentenced Monday in district court to six months in the county jail after pleading guilty to charges of petty larceny, according to court records. The minor youth will be turn ed over to the juvenile author ities, according to the court. The two were charged with the theft of two jackets, a purse, and other personal property from an automobile parked at the Rogue Valley ballroom and skating rink on Saturday morn ing. Arguments Heard on Copco's Keno Dam Klamath Falls - (U.R) Fed eral Power Commission repre sentatives Tuesday heard argu ment for and against the California-Oregon Power company's proposal to build the Big Bend dam No. 2 on the Klamath river, about seven miles downstream from Keno, Ore. Mose of those opposed to con struction of the dam said the water was needed for irrigation. Those in favor of the dam also wanted an agricultural priority set up for use of the water with electrical power production tak ing" second spot.
