Music is Manly Science, Bandmaster Demonstrates New York flJ.R) A mathe matical equation becomes a mu sical composition when band master and composer Paul La Valle starts demonstrating how music is a manly science as well as a fine art. As conductor of the Cities Service Band of America and the nation's leading bandmaster, La Valle talks each year to thou sands of young people who are taking part in the biggest revival of the brass band in history. He explains the revival as part of "the nostalgic era" in Amer ica today, as compared to the Jazz era of the Twenties and the iwing era that followed the de pression. The musical mathematics La Valle explains as a sure fire fas cination to students who regard practicing an instrument as "sis sy" compared to following the footsteps of Albert Einstein. "There are eight million young people playing in school bands in this country," LaValle said with obvious satisfaction. 'This Is the highest figure in history. Anything that can be done to en courage more to take part is worthwhile! Besides getting musical train ing, those students have a won derful hobby to keep them busy after school. The teenagers who join those hysterical stage door mobs for romantic singers or who become juvenile delin quents are the ones who have nothing to do when school it out." With that he began writing a series of figures on a pad in his Rockefeller Center office, which Is filled with stacks of band mu sic and pictures of student bands LaValle has conducted in almost every state. - , "Bach was one of the world's greatest mathematicians," the bandmaster commented. "The ba sis of any art is mathematics. In fact, the study of the universe is based on mathematics." He finished writing the alge braic ratio of four to three, then quickly drew a musical scale to show how the series of numbers in the ratio could be translated into musical rhythm. The numbers first became a rhythm, then were used to meas ure up the scale in semi-tones to make the melody. When he was finished, LaValle then quickly hummed the melody. "I don't say that music is com posed this way, explamed the musicians, who has composed much music himself, by the un mathematical method. "But it is possible to create very interest ing effects this way." LaValle's own compositions are extremely varied, includmg "Symphonic Rhumba"; "U. S Overture"; "Band of America March," and a musical satire called "Concerto Piquante for Licorice Stick." The latter was composed while he was conduct ing the "Chamber Music bociety Seven Communicable Disease Cases Listed Only seven cases of communi cable disease were reported to the Jackson county health de partment for the week ending June 28, according to the de partment's weekly bulletin. NICHOLS United Press Feature Write Washington U.R) A smart 1 back it goes, and she'll give you Harmon Nichols photographer who claimed to know a lot about mathematics spent about an hour trying to figure out the cube root of 357,911. Shakuntala Devi, a mathe matical wizard from India, took one look at the big fig ure and said: "That's easy, Mister. The an swer is 71." The 21-year-old Indian girl has just returned from a tour of Europe where she astonished many minds with her genius The other day, before she held her first press conference in this country, she stumped university mathematics experts in the Washington area. She extracted cube roots of eight and 10 numbers in less than a second, and performed unusual multiplication feats all without pencil or paper. Before she left India for a two-year trip through Europe, she had finished her sophomore year in college. She specialized in physics, chemistry, and math ematics. She failed in English, twice. Shakuntala discovered she could handle figures and that she had a photographic memory when she was 5A years old. The "smart" newspaper men, most of whom can't add up an expense account, tried in vain to stump the girl with high figures. When she was in Britain, the British Broadcasting Company put her on a television show. The interviewer, one Leslie Mitchell, asked her to give the roots of a number of figures, which she did accurately. The RBC had figured out some dandies for her. She pro tested a couple on the ground? that the' answers figured' "' out laboriously in advance "by"6read- casting "experts" were not cor rect. They weren't, either..-. Later the BBC admitted that its math men had gotten most of their figures from a reckoner. These were correct. The ones they thought up were wrong. U. S. Budget Different Story She has no trouble juggling figures, but she was a little puz zled when a reporter asked her if she thought she could balance the United States budget. She said she wouldn't like to tackle anything that difficult. "I'll stick to the roots," she added. "How about a decontrolled grocery, bill?'' another reporter asked her. "I can't figure out my own bank account," she confessed. The 20th root of a 42-digit figure is just play for the girl from India. But she has a few failings. She can't remember her tele phone number, or the number of her hotel room. Excavation Reveals New Indian Culture Mexico City (U.R) Exeava tion for a water system has led to the discovery of a new Teoti huacan Indian culture, entirely separate from the ancient Toltec temples and pyramids north of here at San Juan Teotihuacan. The Mexican national school of anthropology said the "im portant discovery" has been made in one of Mexico City's residential suburbs and Indicates the Toltec Indians at one time inhabited the lower lake region which engulfed the present site of this capital. A small shrine and several small buildings were uncovered In the underground parts of the structures 30 bodies and Toltec pottery were found. . Vacation Time LOANS Plan your vacation NOW.
