Congressional Leaders Seek Compromise on Whether Price C u rbs Be Reta ined or Lifted ' Washington U.R Congres sional leaders groped for a com promise Friday between a Sen ate bill that would keep price controls for eight more months and a House bill that would de control almost all prices at mid night Monday. Administration officials, aghast at the amendment-crippled con: trols measure which the House passed 211 to 185 late Thursday, pinned their hopes on a Senate House conference committee to salvage some inflation curbs from the wreckage. To Seek Compromise As the conference committee began its closed-door delibera tions today, Chairman Burnet R. May bank, D.-S.C, of the Senate Banking committee served notice that-he will "fight to the last ditch" for a compromise to pro tect consumers." Maybank head ed the Senate -conferees. Price Stabilizer Ellis Arnall said he was confident that "Con- Hardwood Floors SANDED and FINISHED 20 Years Experience Modern Equipment Free Estimates Phone 2-7143 gress will yet enact a controls law that will afford protection to the people of America. But it was abundantly clear that whatever legislation finally emerges from Congress will not even remotely resemble Presi dent Truman's request for a two- year extention of "strengthened" controls over all segments of the economy. - ' Will Ask Stop-Gap Bills The present controls law ex pires June 30. If the conferees find it impossible to compromise legislation before the deadline, they will ask the House and Sen ate to rush through stop-gap bills extending the existing controls over credit and allocation of scarce materials for a full year. Administration Rebuffed ' The 'House, with a coalition of Republicans and Southern Democrats firmly in the saddle, handed the administration one rebuff after another Thursday A hectic series of roll call votes produced a bill to continue wage controls, for another year, termi nate rent controls in most com munities September 30, lift price ceilings next week from all items except a few industrial metals, and abolish credit controls. Here are the major differences between the two measures: Price Controls The Senate's eight-month ex tension would prohibit ceilings on fresh fruits and vegetables none of which is controlled now. The House's one-year extension would prohibit ceilings on frozen and canned fruits and vegeta bles, too. In addition, it would immediately remove ceilings on all items not rationed or allocat- 0 aiUftl Ciiilii' TOD C2GHD CUD W JUt Ui CAR MSMUIIt CO. UK, tWf. IIL WW5GY A REM U PtOOf Uf UU NEUIMl SNUB ed. Since nothing now is rationed and only a few metals are allo cated, this would virtually end price controls. This provision, sponsored by Rep. Harry O. Talle, R-Ia., was approved by a 210-182 roll call-vote. The House bill also would stipulate that any ceilings still in force must allow retailers arid wholesalers the same "individu al" mark-ups on each item or service that they received before Korea. This . amendment, spon sored by Rep. Albert M. Cole, R-Kan., was approved 23 1-1 04 Wage Controls s The Senate's eight-month ex tension would exempt engineers, architects and certified public accountants. The House's . one year extension would exempt farm laborers, anyone making less than $1 an hour and em ployes of newspapers, radio and television stations," magazines and theater and advertising agen cies, all of which are already ex empt from price controls. Rent Controls The Senate's eight-month ex tension would make no basic changes. The House would ex tend rent . c6ntrols . for three months, to Sept. 30, except in "critical defense housing areas'' or areas where local governing bbdies request continued con trols. Controls for these areas would, be continued to March 31. The House accepted this pro posal ; by Rep. W. M. Wheeler, D-Ga., by a 225-170 roll call vote. Credit Curbs - The Senate's one-year exten sion would permit the govern ment to restore controls on in stallment buying and to tighten up real estate credit controls, whenever it thought that neces sary. The House would permit no credit curbs. Import-Allocation The. Senate's one-year exten sion contains two contradictory provisions one which would ab olish controls en most materials and another saying they can be continued. The House's one-year extension would force the admin istration to get out of the inter national materials conference or give up much of this control pow- MQN1MNDER Con tines With Outstanding Savings On All Summer Merchandise .. The House would abolish the present board and set up a new one controlled by public members and barred from intervening in any labor dispute. Steel Strike . . This is about the only new provision on which the two bills agree. Both would "request" President Truman to invoke a Taft-Hartley law injunction to get 650,000 striking CIO Steel workers back to work. The House amendment, sponsored by Rep. Howard W. Smith, D-Va., was approved 228-164. Farm Price Supports The House bill would make mandatory the present high 90 per cent of parity supports on next year's crops of wheat, corn, cotton, peanuts and' rice. The Senate bill doesn't contain this new provision. Dairy Curbs " .The Senate bill would repeal the mandatory curbs on imports, as President Truman requested. The House bill would continue them in modified form. i Friday, June 27, 19S2 MEDFORD (OREGON) KAIL TRIBUNE FIVE Mrs. Kader's Case Scheduled To Go To Jurymen Today . Both sides rested their cases Thursday' and final instructions to the jury were scheduled Fri day morning. The defense rested its case without calling the young de fendant to the witness stand.
