Steps Being Taken To End Pollution Of rs in State Salem (U.R) Oregon is tak ing its river pollution problem seriously. - A total of $17,550,000 has been spent since January, 1946 In construction of sewage treat ment plants and other facilities to eliminate pollution in the Wil lamette river. The report was made to Gov. Douglas McKay by Curtiss M. Everts Jr., chief state sanitary engineer and secretary of the Oregon State Sanitary Author ity. More to Be Spent Everts told the governor, that another $3,117,500 will be spent this year by municipalities in the anti-pollution drive for a whopping total of more than $20,000,000. Before the. sanitary authority was organized, 24 small sewage treatment plants had been built. But seven of these need replace ment or enlargement, Everts said.' Six new treatment plants and enlargement of three exist ing plants are in the planning stage. Everts said nine cities along the Willamette river need both sewer systems and sewage treat ment plants before the program for cities and towns is complet ed. , Industries Cooperate' Industries using the river for elimination of industrial waste are cooperating with the sani tary authority, Everts said. Cooperating in this program for the Willamette river have been to date, 24 canneries, four pulp and paper mills, one hard board mill, three meat packing plants, one tannery and four flax reveting plants. Thirteen in dustries whose wastes are reach ing streams through public sew er systems will be provided with treatment by municipal plants by the end of 1953, Everts forecast. First Federal's Assets Now Over $2,000,000 Mark Publication of the June . 30 statement of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of this city will show assets in ex cess of two million , dollars, ac cording to an announcement to day by George M. Roberts, presi dent of the institution: This in dicates a growth within the past two and ofte-half years of more than 100 per cent, making this local association one of Oregon's fastest growing institutions, Rob erts states. The First Federal Savings and Loan Association was chartered in 1934 to a group of Medford business men headed by Fred L. Heath, as president, with initial assets of approximately $60,00 William H. Fluhrer succeeded Heath as president in 1940 and served in that capacity until his death in 1948. The association's assets at that time were near the million . dollar . mark. He is president of two of this area's larger industries,' the White City Lumber company and Southern Oregon. Sugar Pine Corporation, and is vice president and a director of the California Oregon Power Com pany. "Mr. Jackson also has substan tial interests in the Willamette Valley, including business . and farming properties in Linn coun ty. Dividend Voted Directors of the First -Federal Savings and Loan Association voted a dividend for the first six months of 1952 on the basis of 3 per cent per year, payable July x, on all investment and savings accounts, according to R. F. Kyle, manager of the associa tion. ."This dividend rate is high er than is generally paid by sav ings and loans associations in other Oregon communities and throughout the, nation," the man ager stated. . Officers of the association are George!. Roberts,' president; A. J. Hanby, vice-president; R. F. Kyle, secretary-treasurer and general manager. The board of directors also includes Ralph H. Norris, Herb Grey, W. H. Reich stein and Glenn L. Jackson. Mary Jane Myers, assistant secretary-treasurer, and Robert F.
