FOUR MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wedntidar. June 18, 1952 Profitable Era for Tourist Trade in Europe Forecast New York (U.R) A new and profitable era for U.S. tour ist trade in Europe is forecast as the result of a trans-Atlantic low-fare air service inaugurated by Pan American World Air ways. - Called the "Rainbow" service, it is a tourist class air service which makes it possible for the first time for a man with an av erage income to spend a two week vacation in Europe. Fares on the tourist class planes specially designed super-charged Douglas DC 6's generally are about one-third lower than the first class fares between New York and cities on the continent. The tourist-class service offers flight accommodations on planes FIIOS Freshly Ground FEEDS Are more palatable. Our Medford Made Feeds are really fresh MORTON MILLINO CO. 10 W.it Jeduen SlrMl "'Him i HUT" flying parallel routes with first- class planes, with fewer in-flight service trimmings and comforts, The tourist planes have more seats, fewer passenger atten dants and no bars. Meals, in stead of being gratis as on first class flights, are served at cost. Breakfast costs 50 cents, lunch eon or dinner $1.75. Safety standards are precisely the same on all flights. Savings Cited Pan American figured that the savings between tourist and first class fares will pay for lodging, meals and sightseeing tours fur an average traveler for two weeks. This new type of travel, the airlines decided, would appeal to 15,000,000 Americans who have incomes between $3,000 and $0,000 a year and also to 5, 000,000 who earn more than $6, 000 a year. Statistics show that nearly three-fourths of persons in those income brackets get two weeks' paid vacations. Here is an example of the sav ings: Round trip from New York to: On- Off season season tourist tourist First class class class Lond'n $711.00 $486.00 $417.00 Paris ' 747.00 522.00 453.00 Rome 868.00 643.00 574.00 Shan'on 658.00 433.80 364.80 The off-season runs November through March, the on-season from April through October. Matter of Dollars Travel and tourist agencies In Europe predicted that because Bee on Nose Brings Advice for Motorists Oklahoma City U.R) Okla homa Safety Commissioner Dixie Gilmer had some advice for motorists Wednesday: "If a bee or hornet lands on your nose while driving, for heavens' sake stop the car first and swat the insect second." of the new low fare service, Americans would spend many more of their vacation dollars in Europe. They pointed out that the tourist industry is the larg est single dollar earner In Eu rope. Their statistics show that those who go to Europe by beat do not spend as much money as those who travel by air because they do not stay as long in Eu rope, spending most of their va cation in travel time. The flying time from New York to Paris on the tourist service is only lZ'i hours against five to six days by ship. "Tourist-class air service is simply an application of the test ed American principles of mass production achieving a wider and wider market by lowering the unit price of the product," declared Juan T. Trippe, presi dent of Pan American. In inaugurating the new low fare travel service, Pan Ameri can placed emphasis on pre-arranged, all-inclusive vacations that enable the traveler, before he leaves home, to pay for round-trip air transportation, re served hotel accommodations (which still are a problem in Europe), sightseeing tours, and motor and rail transportation within Europe.
