i St. Louis Browns Team Rejoices! Over Firing of Rogers Hornsby Wednesdtf June 11. 1931 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE OTB Boston (U.R) The St. Louis Browns hated gruff old Rogers Hornsby and were delighted that he was fired and Marty Marion hired as their manager. Marion immediately promis ed a "reform wave" to get rid of the austere Hornsby program which had the team in a tur moil. No more long practices ... no more guessing for pitch ers who don't know when they'll work ... no more rigid club house atmosphere, Marty vowed. - Usually when a manager is fired, there Is an avalanche of pretty, words about the "good of the team." But not in this case. Club President Bill Veeck personally apologized to the boys Tuesday night tor hiring Hornsby in the first place. Veeck Gets Trophy ' t The team presented Veeck with a hastily-purchased silver trophy for . "the greatest . play since the emancipation proclamation." tiornsoy nimself left with a parting shot at Veeck: "When you work for a screwball, you've got to expect screwball tactics he said. He was paid off 20 years ago when he was fired by the Browns; The man who fired him was Bill Veeck, Sr. the sport shirt impressario's ratner. Veeck insisted it was Horns-' by s tough tactics which brought ' about the change. "These are men, not things to be manipula ted," he said. ZIMMERMANGETS HIT Ventura, Calif. (U.R) Catcher Jerry Zimmerman, $80,' 000 bonus player from Milwau- kie, Ore., got one hit, a single, in live trips to the plate in his first professional baseball game Tuesday night. Zimmerman, who ; was signed by. the Boston. Red 1 Sox, is playing with San Jose of the California State league, which dropped an 8-7 decision to Ventura. They went out and showed that they would give out with spirit and hustle for Marion by knocking the Red Sox out of first place with a 7 to 4 triumph. Homers by Bobby Young and Bob Nieman gave Ned Garver an early lead and, when he fal tered later, the unbelieveable Satchel Paige came in and pitched three-hit scoreless ball the rest of the way to protect Garver's third victory. George , Kell hit a Boston homer. First This Year " The' defeat of the Red Sox coupled wfth 'Ed Lopat's gor geous four-hit 4 to 0 shutout of the Tigers at New York, put the Yankees into first place for the first time this year by three percentage points. Yogi Berra delivered three of the Yankee runs with a pair of booming homers as Lop at breezed to his third victory, giv ing only two walks and -striking out five. Record Equalled A homer by Larry Doby gave Cleveland a 4 to 3 triumph at Washington, moving the Indians into second place ahead of Bos ton. At Philadelphia the White Sox went hit crazy with a 12-run rally in the fourth that gave them a 15 to 4 victory over the Athletics. Sam Mele equalled a modern record by batting in six runs in the big inning with a homer and a triple. In the National League, ' the Cardinals broke an eight-game Brooklyn winning streak with a 1 to 0 10-inning victory, but the second place- Giants- missed a chance to gain and remained five games behind when they blew a 14-inning, 6 to 5 decision at Cincinnati. Cubs Move Up The third place Cubs moved to within one game of the skid ding Giants by bouncing the j Phils, 10 to 5, and the Pirates topped the Braves, 7 to 3. Mele gained his six RBI's on a three-run homer and a three-run triple. Hector Rodriguez also hit a three run homer and Al Zarilla connected with a two-run route clout in the rout.
