St. Louis Browns Team Rejoices!
Over Firing of Rogers Hornsby
Wednesdtf June 11. 1931
MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE OTB
Boston (U.R) The St. Louis
Browns hated gruff old Rogers
Hornsby and were delighted
that he was fired and Marty
Marion hired as their manager.
Marion immediately promis
ed a "reform wave" to get rid
of the austere Hornsby program
which had the team in a tur
moil. No more long practices
... no more guessing for pitch
ers who don't know when they'll
work ... no more rigid club
house atmosphere, Marty vowed.
- Usually when a manager is
fired, there Is an avalanche of
pretty, words about the "good
of the team." But not in this
case. Club President Bill Veeck
personally apologized to the
boys Tuesday night tor hiring
Hornsby in the first place.
Veeck Gets Trophy ' t
The team presented Veeck
with a hastily-purchased silver
trophy for . "the greatest . play
since the emancipation proclamation."
tiornsoy nimself left with a
parting shot at Veeck: "When
you work for a screwball, you've
got to expect screwball tactics
he said.
The players whooped it up in
k celebration. "At least now I'll
know when I m going to pitch,
said Ned Garver. "Under Horns
by I wasn't sure even after I
read it in the paper.
"You don't see a sad face do
you? asked another player.
"Twenty-five players can't be
wrong," . Veeck said. "I never
should have hired him in the
first place. Jt was an expensive
mistake.
Hornsby Insisted he was fir
ed because Veeck interfered
with the way he ran the club
"and there can't be two boss
es.
Hornsby had a three-year con
tract for a total of $120,000 and
it was paid in full. This was the
first year. He was paid off 20
years ago when he was fired
by the Browns; The man who
fired him was Bill Veeck, Sr.
the sport shirt impressario's
ratner.
Veeck insisted it was Horns-'
by s tough tactics which brought
' about the change. "These are
men, not things to be manipula
ted," he said.

Yankees Gain Percentage
Lead in American League
BY UNITED PRESS
Like freed slaves with whom
they compared themselves the
St. Louis Browns started their
new manager, Marty Marion, off
with a key victory over the Red
Sox, a victory that was the labor
of love.
They went out and showed
that they would give out with
spirit and hustle for Marion by
knocking the Red Sox out of first
place with a 7 to 4 triumph.
Homers by Bobby Young and
Bob Nieman gave Ned Garver
an early lead and, when he fal
tered later, the unbelieveable
Satchel Paige came in and
pitched three-hit scoreless ball
the rest of the way to protect
Garver's third victory.
George , Kell hit a Boston
homer.
First This Year "
The' defeat of the Red Sox
coupled wfth 'Ed Lopat's gor
geous four-hit 4 to 0 shutout of
the Tigers at New York, put the
Yankees into first place for the
first time this year by three
percentage points.
Yogi Berra delivered three of
the Yankee runs with a pair of
booming homers as Lop at
breezed to his third victory, giv
ing only two walks and -striking
out five.
Record Equalled
A homer by Larry Doby gave
Cleveland a 4 to 3 triumph at
Washington, moving the Indians
into second place ahead of Bos
ton. At Philadelphia the White
Sox went hit crazy with a 12-run
rally in the fourth that gave
them a 15 to 4 victory over the
Athletics. Sam Mele equalled a
modern record by batting in six
runs in the big inning with a
homer and a triple.
In the National League, ' the
Cardinals broke an eight-game
Brooklyn winning streak with a
1 to 0 10-inning victory, but the
second place- Giants- missed a
chance to gain and remained
five games behind when they
blew a 14-inning, 6 to 5 decision
at Cincinnati.
Cubs Move Up
The third place Cubs moved
to within one game of the skid
ding Giants by bouncing the j
Phils, 10 to 5, and the Pirates
topped the Braves, 7 to 3.
Mele gained his six RBI's on a
three-run homer and a three-run
triple. Hector Rodriguez also hit
a three run homer and Al Zarilla
connected with a two-run route
clout in the rout. Chicago' made
16 hits.
