Roosevelt was the far-seeing politician who shifted the Democratic conven tion to second place after many years had established a tradi tion that his party teed off first. Liked Short Campaign FDR also forced both conven tions into July. June had been the customary convention month until Mr. Roosevelt came along. He held that there was too much dead time between the nominating conventions and the election. FDR liked a short and sharp campaign and held that September was the time to start it. His maneuvering left the Democrats wun a real advan tage this year in holding the sec ond convention because the man and platform put up by the Re publicans probably will help Democrats to determine their own choice and strategy. Would Want Defenders Republican nomination of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, for example, would pitch the entire campaign on domestic issues. There is not much difference be tween the Eisenhower and Tru man foreign policies. Against Eisenhower, the Dem ocrats would want their most vigorous defenders of Truman domestic policy. Vice President Alben W. Barkley would be as handy with that as any Demo crat. Sen. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, Sen. Robert S. Kerr of Oklahoma, and some others would be well qualified. Republican nomination of Sen Robert A. Taft would make for eign policy the top campaign is sue and the Democrats would draft their platforms and, per haps, nominate their ticket ac cordingly. Gov. Adlai E. Steven son of Illinois has a foreign back ground. So does W. Averell Harriman. Might Weaken Position It has been suggested, too, that Stevenson's determination not to be a candidate for Democratic presidential nomination this year might weaken more than some what if Taft were nominated. Woodell, chairman of the ceremony. The exercises will be held at the But ler Memorial band shell in Lithia park at 3 p.m. Of the county representation, 31 are from Ashland, 27 from Medford, 4 from Talent, 2 from Eagle Point, Rogue River, Trail Central Point and Phoenix, and 1 each from Prospect, Shady Cove, Butte Falls and Jackson ville. Robert E. Phillips, Ashland, president of the senior class, to day announced that graduates will meet in Churchill hall audit orium at 12:20 p.m. Thursday. Final instructions about the cere mony will be given at that time, he said, and all candidates for diplomas will be required to attend. Jackson List Largest Dean Woodell said the Jack son county candidate list for dip lomas is the largest followed by 27 from Klamath county, 20 from Douglas county, 17 from Josephine county and 13 from Coos county. Picking Price for Strawberries Talked Salem (U.R) It looks like the picking price for strawber ries in the Willamette valley this season will be four and five cents a pound. Growers met with State Lab or Commissioner William E. Kimsey here Tuesday night. They did not come up with a definitely established price but they made this provision; If the cannery price is less than 17 cents a pound the pick ing price will be four cents plus a half-cent bonus for picking out the season. If the cannery price Is 17 cents or more, the picking price will be four and one-half cents plus the half-cent bonus.
