EIGHT MEDFOBD (OREGON) Movie Makers Rejoice Over Supreme Court's Censorship Washington (U,R) Movie makers rejoiced over a Supreme Court decision which they said was a long step toward striking "the shackles of censorship from the screen." The Court reversed Monday a New York "state court decision upholding censorship of the film "The Miracle" as "sacrilegous." Justice Tom C. Clark- speaking for the Court, held that films, like newspapers, are protected by the "free speech" guarantee mom, C&L Orange-rich Real Gold tastes betterl Children. ..grownups love it. MAIL TRIBUNE Decision in the Constitution and may not be banned for religious reasons. Old Decision Overruled In the unanimous opinion, Clark said that in applying the New York law, "The censor is set adrift upon a boundless sea amid a myriad of conflicting cur rents of religious views, with no charts but those provided by the most vocal and powerful ortho doxies." The decision overruled a 1915 Supreme Court finding in an Ohio case that movies are merely a form of entertainment and therefore not entitled to consti tutional protection. Clark said advances in film techniques have made today's motion picture in dustry quite different from that of 1915. By specifically striking down censorship on religious grounds, the Court reinforced a doctrine which has been implicit in sev eral of its recent decisions that the constitutional principle of separation of church and state implies freedom for the expres sion of irreligious views as well as freedom of worship. The Boys State program, sponsored throughout the nation by the American Legion, is es sentially a program of education. Its purpose is to teach boys of today constructive attitudes to ward the American form of gov ernment. It attempts to show them that democratic govern ment has not outlived its use fullness, Ettel said, but that a democracy needs an intelli gent citizenry and a clean, hon est and impartial administration responsive to the will of the people.
