Eidgway tells a joint session of Congress that false Communist charges against the United Nations add up to a "monumental warning" the Reds in Korea may be plotting germ and gas warfare. Tito's Refusal To Fight Over Trieste Heads Week's News By PHIL NEWSOM United Pres. Foreign Analyst The week's balance sheet be tween the good and bad news In the hot and cold wars: THE GOOD 1. Marshal Tito said that Yugoslavia never would go to war over Trieste. He added that he still thought Italy and Yugo slavia could work out a peace ful settlement of their dispute over the "free territory" which now is split into two zones, one governed by the United States and Britain, and the other by Yugoslavia. The Allied attempt to give Italy a greater voice in the U. S. and British zone and thus greater bargaining power with Tito seemed to be bearing fruit. Pinay Wins Backing 2. French right - wing bus inessman Premier Antoine Pin ay won new backing in his fight to bring a stable govern ment to France In the senator ial elections which gave him nine more supporters at the ex pense of General De Gaulle. Pinay also won assembly ap proval of his plan to issue gov ernment bonds in lieu of a tax rise. One objective of the bond issue was to bring out vast sums of money hidden since the days of the German occupation. 3. Trouble might come later, but for the moment at least Al lied plans to restore virtual sov ereignty to West Germany was moving ahead on schedule de spite bitter Russian opposition Paralleling action on the Ger man peace contract were steps by the foreign ministers to put final approval on the European Defense Community Plan and the Schuman Plan to pool West ern Europe's coal and steel. THE BAD 1. Communist flags still flew over Compound No. 78, most no torious of the prisoner-of-war camps on Korea's Koje Island, and Communist prisoners re mained in full control of activ ities behind the barbed wire bar ricades. Disorders also broke out in mainland prisoner camps, proving the Reds had managed to infiltrate camps which sup posedly were occupied only by carefully screened anti-Communists. British butt China 2. British businessmen d 1 s closed they were abandoning as sets valued at nearly one bil lion dollars in Red China, and getting out with whatever they could persuade the Communists to give them. In China, the Brit ish had learned the hard way that free enterprise could not operate under Communist rules. The British action also aroused new fears as to the future of Hong Kong. 3. The Arab-Asian block was again attempting to line up sup port to bring the French-Tunisian dispute before the United Nations. The United States den led It was pressuring France for a quick settlement of the quar rel, which is working against the western defense coalition, but It was doubtful if the U. S. would abstain once more if the question again reached the U. N. LOST?
