All of Burbank's fire equipment was called to help studio fire men put out the blaze as It raged through "tinder dry" movie sets. GOP Delegation Slates Meeting In Salem June 7 Robert A. Elliott, Bedford, chairman of the state Republi can central committee who was elected one of Oregon's 10 dele I ates-at-large to the GOP nation al convention In Chicago this July, said an organizational meeting of the delegation will be held at the Senator hotel, Sa lem, at noon on Saturday, June 7. The delegation, which also will Include William McAllister. Medford attorney, will select a chairman and other officers, and decide which members will serve on the convention creden tials, organization, rules and res olutions committees. They will also discuss their plans for badges and other dis tinguishing signs and symbols. Elliott said that plans call for the opening of an Oregon dele gation headquarters at the Con rad Hilton hotel. Elliott made the announce ment after discussions with oth er members of the delegation, Including Gov. Douglas McKay and Sen. Wayne Morse. He said that Governor McKay reported he will appoint Wil liam C. Robinson, chairman of the Multnomah county GOP committee as his alternate, and that Senator Morse will name H. Clay Myers Jr., chairman of the state Young Republican federa tion, and a defeated candidate for delegate, as his alternate. Elliott said he has named his brother, Douglas P. Elliott, who is also prominent In Republican political circles in Portland, as alternate. McAllister has not yet decided on his alternate. Mark Hatfield, Salem, of the state Eisenhower for President committee, has named as alter nate William Phillips, Salem motor car dealer who has serv ed as chairman of the committee. Phoenix Student Body Elects 1952-53 Officers Phoenix New student body officers of Phoenix high school for the school year 1952-53 were elected at a recent assembly. Those named are Bill Bar low, president; Harold Covey, vice-president; Shirley Dudley, secretary, and Dolly Waggoner, treasurer. Three-Day School For Forest Fire Fighters To Open A three-day school for forest firefighters of the southwestern Oregon district of the state de partment of forestry will be con ducted Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, according to Dis trict Warden. Ted Maul. Wardens, lookouts and other forestry personnel will partici pate in the course, which is an annual event held before the fire season begins In earnest. The classes will be held at the district headquarters on Table Rock road, and In the field. On Wednesday, all partici pants will take courses in orien tation, fire reports and other forms, safety and the use of fire tools, and map reading. Lookout training will be given, and war dens will have a class in safe driving. Other Training On Thursday, lookout train ing will continue, and wardens will be schooled in compass and pacing, control of small fires, will see an air drop demonstra tion, will learn progressive me thods of line construction, and other fire chasing problems. The final day the wardens will have courses In fire organiza tion, field location of small fires and fire mapping, district poli cies, and equipment instruction The school will be under the direction of Don Maus, Salem, State training officer, and Maul. U.R) The j the clucking of the denizens of lows Farm Bureau Federation 'he poultry yard." said Monday that lonely women are besieging Iowa's eligible bachelor farmers with proposals of marriage and letters express ing desire to come and settle down in the tall corn state. The federation said that at least four farmers have received hundreds of letters from women seeking to tie the knot and take up life as farmwives. Writer Started It Three of the girls live in Brooklyn, one is a Texas grand mother and another is a lady bus driver in Pennsylvania. Henry Felsrn, a free-lance writer from West Des Moines, started the whole thing, the fed eration said, when he wrote a story for a national magazine saying 25,000 to 50,000 young Iowa farmers are anxious to marry. Felsen wrote the bachelor farmers have good incomes and excellent futures, but they have trouble finding wives. From a woman bus driver of Beaver Falls, Pa., came a letter: "My greatest desire is to give up bus driving and live on a farm. I would like to communi cate with an eliuible farmer." Good Prospects Plentiful A minister's daughter in New Jersey wrote that "there are plenty of girls who would make good wives." The three Brooklyn girls said, "We don't have much chance to marry farmers." The Texas grandmother wrote: "It is spring and 1 feel the call of the land. I want to make a garden and hear Rhode Island Beauty Contest Denied Permit Providence, R.I. (U.R) The Bureau of Licenses refused Tuesday to permit a Miss Rhode Island of 1D52 contest to be held because church leaders -feared it might tend "to corrupt the mor als of youth." Bureau Chairman Joseph Scuncio said the state's beauties could not appear in bathing suits or evening gowns because "they'll never have a burlesque show in Providence. There has n't been one in 18 years." SOC Speech Fraternity Initiates 4 Members Ashland Sigma Alpha Sig ma, speech fraternity at South ern Oregon college, increased its membership to 50 students last evening with initiation of four pledges, according to Ralph Wood. Ashland, president. The neophytes were welcomed at a ladies' night banquet held at Susanne Homes hall. New members are Wayne R. Rawson, Medford; Arthur N. Ostrander, Ashland; E.
