TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thunday, Mar 15. 1952 MedfordJTribuni ID ITS Tornado Cindermen Head for Corvallis; Dash Result Disputed Thnri was a Question todav as to whether the Medford high track and field crew that qual ified for the state meet at Cor vallis this week-end would have 10 or 11 berths in the Oregon titular event. The question arose from a "rhubarb" over the results of the 100-yard dash in the district meet last Saturday at Klamath Falls. There was ft dispute in that meet over whether Bill Redden of Medford or Baker of Ashland placed second and thereby qualified for the state rivalry in the race. Baker was finally given the place. Photo Evidence However, on Wednesday Med ford coaches got hold of a photo graph that indicated conclusive ly to them that Redden crossed the finish line ahead of Baker. They submitted their evidence to the district committee for a ruling today. On the committee are Frank Thomas, Grants Pass; Warren Center, Rogue River, and Lester Harris, Medford, principals of the respective schools. The Tornado track squad of 10 men, Head Coach Bob New land and Coaches Fred Spiegel berg and Lee Ragsdale headed for Corvallis at noon today. Pre liminaries in Class A rivalry are set for Friday with finals cn Saturday. Dennis Da vis is relay alternate. From this area Grants Pass Will have 11 berths and Ash land three or four in the state A action. In the B finale Rogue River, paced by Jim Boulter, will have nine spots, Jacksonville four and Phoenix two. Paul Evensen Line Mentor Of Tornado Paul Evensen, a San Francis can who won all-coast and all American honors as a guard at Oregon State college, has been named line coach of the Medford high school football team. Announcement of the appoint ment of Evensen was made by Fred Spiegelberg, who recently was moved up from the line tu toring duties to the head coach ing position. Evensen was head coach at Springfield last full and for the two seasons before that was line coach of the Millers. He served also as wrestling mentor at the school. Captained West The new tutor, who stands six feet four inches and weighs about 240 pounds, won all-coast honors in 1046 and 1947. He was named to the Look and Sun ail American second teams in 1947 and made several all-Amcrican honorable mentions. Evensen enptained the West team In the Shrine game on Jan. 1, 1948, at San Francisco. He was graduated from Ore gon State In 1048 and played one season with the San Francisco 49ers pro team. Ref eree Frankie Van gave the bout to the former champ by a slim point 83 to 82. The Mexican brawler admit ted "I theenk I was behind go ing Into the 10th round." The United Press card had him six points back at that point. But Salas famed for an unpre dictable temper which has pro pelled him into two cafe brawls, caught fire in the 11th as he came charging like a wild bull and flailed away for the last five rounds with rights and lefts to keep the fallen king off balance. Auto Races Slated for Grants Pass Big car auto races will be held on Memorial day at the Jose phine county fairgrounds at Grants Pass. There will be four heat races of five laps each, a B main of 20 laps (10 miles) and a main event uf 35 events. Time trials are set for 1 p.m. and a trophy dash will be held at 2:30 p.m. The races are on annual event on the coast, under sanction of the Western Racing association They are generally held in South ern California and it is consid ered a "sporting plum" for Grants Pass to get the races this year. Grunts Pass is a midway point for participants on the coast. Large Field A field of 22 to' 23 cars is an ticipatrd, including four of the fastest in Oregon. Arrangements have been made to seat about 3,000 people. The vehicles will be the regu lar Indianapolis type cars with whcelbases cut down and special rear ends installed for half-mile track racing. FISHING CLOSED An emergency fishing closure on a mile section of the North Santiam river to protect spring Chinook salmon and steelhead held for spawning below the fish commission rack near Gates has been Invoked by the game com mission. Salmon and steelhead are to be seined from pools be low the rack and spawned for the Marion Forks salmon haten ery. (International Soundphoto) TRIBUNE TRAPSHOOT AT GUN CLUB SUNDAY Medford Gun club will hold its last scheduled "big tourney" of the spring and summer season this week-end. The occasion will be the 19th annual Medford Mail Tribune trapshoot. It is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday with three events each day. The opening event Saturday at 10 a.m. will be the Rogue Valley Hundred. Defenders are Orley Milligan, Coos Bay, in Class A; E. E. Driscoll, Klamath Falls, in Class B; L. A. Shepherd, Ophir, in Class C; and Al Fleishman, Grants Pass, in Class D. Peters Defends Second match will be the 50 target Chester Wood handicap, won by Don Peters, Sublimity, last year. Saturdays concluding shoot will be 25-pair doubles in which Dick Skeeters, Medford, was 1951 winner. Shooting on Sunday will com mence at 8:30 a.m. with the Mail Tribune trophy event first on the list. There will be 100 tar gets at 16 yards. George Bronson. Grants Pass, won the contest last year. The Mendenhall tro phy goes to the best score for Class B and lower in this match. Driscoll nabbed it last year. The main Sunday afternoon event will be the $500 Medford handicap in which Peters is de fender. Twenty-five pair doubles will conclude the day. Dick Skeeters won the Sunday dou bles, also, last year. 450 Targets There will be 450 targeU pos sible for each shooter. Twenty five trophies are being offered, in all. In the $500 Medford handicap the cash purse will be divided among the 15 high guns with the winner to get $200 and runner up $100. The Chester Wood han dicap will pay $100 to a repeat winner this year. April Said Warmer, Drier Than Usual The month of April averaged slightly above normal in tem perature, and below normal in rainfall, the monthly weather bureau report, issued today, re vealed. Cold nights caused orchard heating seven times during the month, and some freeze damage to fruit was sustained, accord ing to the report, although the extent of damage had not been ascertained by the end of the month. Sub-normal rainfall. totaling .25 of an Inch, was detri mental to pastures and low ranges. . . The warmest temperature dur ing the month was recorded on the 17th, 84 degrees, and the coldest, 26 degrees, was on the 20th.
