Public reaction in Lebanon to a proposal by the president of the Socialist -Progressive party for creation of a "neutral bloc" in the Middle East between Rus sia and the West was one of in difference. Kamal Joumblatt, 29, who also is a member of parliament for Mt. Lebanon, proposed in a note to the Lebanese government that the Arab and Asiatic states enter immediate negotiations with Russia, China, France, Britain and the United States for a treaty of neutrality and non aggression. Command Opposed The proposal followed a meet ing of the Socialist Party, which decided to oppose creation of the projected Middle East high command and placing airfields and communications at the dis posal of the Western allies in time of war. He replied that "enlight ened public opinion" would bring pressure to bear on the belligerents and force them to respect neutrals. Both the Lebanese and Arab press regarded his proposals as "academic." 71 GIVE YOUR HOME A BEAUTY TREATMENT TOO! 1 Jh I., i ) -71 11 II A I ' .11 "1 IMPROVEMENT LOANS FOR YOUR HOME Don't put off needed repairs that would mean greater expense later on. (International Soundphoto) Jackson County Farm Notes Planting of Tender Vegetables Now Safe It is late enough now so that in the farmer sections it would be safe to set out plants of our tender vegetables. In the colder areas it would be best not to set these tender plants out for an other week. These tender vege tables include tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. If after setting these plants out a frost is fore cast, one could protect a few of them by laying a newspaper over them in a tent-like manner and weighting each corner down with a clod. Those who have grown their own plants and haven't had a chance to properly harden them off will be interested in some re search carried on by the Univer sity of California. It has been found benefits from spraying the plants with 45 of a pound of sugar and a level teaspoon of de tergent soap in a gallon of water before setting them in the field. The treatment increases the car bohydrate content and will re duce the shock of transplanting. One gallon of spray will cover a hundred square feet of plant bed area. Two applications should be made, one four days before transplanting and the other two days before transplant ing. Plants could be washed off just prior to digging to remove the stickiness. Tomato plants in the seed bed stage are also susceptible to cer tain virus diseases which infect the tobacco plant. They are so susceptible that anyone who has areas, the cuts should be coated handled tobacco or cigarettes and then handles tomatoes can infect the tomato plant. As a precau tion, any smoRer who handles to mato plants should first wash his hands thoroughly with soap and water. Stone Growers Hav. Trouble With Trees , Stone fruit growers this year are having a lot more than nor mal trouble with limbs or even entire trees wilting and dying. The trouble is mainly due to bac terial gumosis. The bacterial disease is simi lar to pear blight and, like pear blight, the only control is to cut out the infected tissue. Where in dividual limbs are diseased they can be cut out, but where the disease gets into the trunk or the roots it is much more serious and frequently it causes the loss of the entire tree. Fortunately, the disease has now about run its course and in another week or two there will be no further enlargement of these disease cankers. However, as affected limbs may continue to live for several days before food reserves are exhausted, new evidence of the disease will continue to show up for quite some time On small limbs it is best to re move the entire branch, but where the disease is in larger limbs or the tree trunk, the dis colored area can be cut out with a knife and unless it is too extensive, the limb will heal over and recover. About a week after trimming out the diseased with a copper paint. This can be made by mixing water with a fixed copper into the consist ency of paint. C. B. We fully realize the difficult and embarras sing task you will confront in choosing such a list from among the very many strong and worthy candidates who are on the ballot, but we are convinced that unless such a list is recommended by your Committee, the heavy Eisenhower majority vote will be dangerously . scattered and diluted, and the concentrated minority vote for the Taft candidates might elect many of them. They should be defeated in their scheme of filing by petition to escape the moral and legal obligation of supporting the choice of the majority of the Oregon vot ers. The only way to defeat that scheme is to concentrate the majority Eisenhower vote on a list of candidates recommended by Ore 'gon'sown Eisenhower Campaign Committee.''
