A Nchos' Worth of Comment On BY HARMAN United Pran Washington (U.PJ If the man behind the wheel were mTr aWt. America would have a more respec table safety record on the highways. A veteran safe t y expert puts It this way: "Failure of the U. S. mo torist to check on his own Harmon Nichols physical fit ness to drive contributes heavily to accidents." L. S. (Pete) Harris, executive director of the American Associ ation of Motor Vehicle Adminis trators, says "Just as it is Im portant to know that your car is mechanically perfect, it is im perative the motorist while driv ing make sure of his own con dition, particularly with refer ence to fatigue and drowsiness. When these conditions appear, a halt is indicated." Frequent Rest Advocated Harris advocates frequent rest stops, like the coffee breaks taken during working hours in business and industry. This ap plies particularly, he adds, to long trips. The importance of taking it easy was pointed up recently by the New York University Safety Center. This outfit made a sur vey and discovered that in large cities, the average motorist must make as many as 50 decisions an hour. Many of these are on the split-se,cond, such as crossing lanes to make a left turn or avoiding the fellow up ahead who slams on his brakes without warning or gives the wrong sig nal for' a turn. Country Average Less Out in the country, where traffic is thinner, the average is 20 decisions an hour. The center figures that on congested thoroughfares, the mo torist "is always less than a second away from an accident." Harris adds to this by saying' "Uninterrupted driving, like prolonged work of any kind, builds drowsiness and fatigue to point that can be fatal. The tired driver is less vigilant, loses the ability lo judge speed and distances, reacts more slowly to emergencies and is less able to resist the glare of headlights. Mistake Can Be Fatal "A mistake by an overtired office worker can be corrected with an eraser; a mistake be- TOO LATE TO CLASSIFY WE FIX EM while you sleep HAWKINS all night GAKAGE 6 in s Riverside Ph ,115:1s WE GIVE GREEN STAMPS LEGAL NOTICES NOTICE OF HEARINQ OF FINAL ACCOUNT IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE ESTATE Or OREGON FOR THE COUNTY OF JACKSON IN THE MATTER OF THE ESTATE of FANNIE H. Last year the- estimated high way toll was 37,500 dead and 1,300.000 injured. Harris feels that these shocking figures could be reduced if drivers would take it easy. He gives a few rules. Start the trip when rested; keep plenty of fresh air in the car; make those coffee stops; engage in light con versations with the passengers; and when you begin to doubt your own judgment let some body else drive or stop and get some sleep, Farm Bureau Urges Dropping Controls On Prices, Wages Washington (U.R) The Amer ican Farm Bureau Federation has told Congress that "there will never be a better time than now to drop these unworkable controls" over prices and wages. It said the "inflation psychol ogy" has "subsided." Another major farm group, the National Grange, urged that Congress at least prohibit price controls on farm products which are not rationed. No farm prod ucts are rationed now. May Extend Act The views were set forth by the groups' national leaders in statements prepared for the House Banking committee. The committee is considering legis lation to extend the Defense Pro duction Act beyond June 30. Farm Bureau President Allan B. Kline recommended that Con gress extend the powers to set allocations and priorities on ma terials and to curb consumer and real estate credit. Herschel D. Newsom, Grange Master, also recommended ex tension of authority to control credit. Mongold Dairy Herd Tops in Production W. D. Mongold, Route 1, EaRle Point, has received special cer tificates for outstanding produc tion records of three Jersey cows from the American Jcrsc Cat tle club of Columbus, O. A gold medal certificate went to one cow with a record of 12,234 pounds of milk and 682 pounds of buttcrfat in 305 days at the age of six years and scv- cn months. Silver certificates went to two others with records of 9,828 pounds of milk and 599 pounds of buttcrfat in 295 days at four years and six months, and 9,281 pounds of milk, 514 pounds of butterfat in 305 days at two years and one month of age, respectively.
