United Pran

A veteran

"Failure of

Frequent Rest Advocated
Harris advocates frequent rest

long trips.
The importance of taking it

the New York University Safety

cities, the average motorist must
make as many as 50 decisions an
hour. Many of these are on the
split-se,cond, such as crossing
lanes to make a left turn or
avoiding the fellow up ahead
who slams on his brakes without
warning or gives the wrong sig
nal for' a turn.
Country Average Less
Out in the country, where
traffic is thinner, the average is
20 decisions an hour.
The center figures that on
congested thoroughfares, the mo
torist "is always less than a
second away from an accident."
Harris adds to this by saying'
"Uninterrupted driving, like
prolonged work of any kind,
builds drowsiness and fatigue to
point that can be fatal. The
tired driver is less vigilant, loses
the ability lo judge speed and
distances, reacts more slowly to
emergencies and is less able to
resist the glare of headlights.

1,300.000 injured. Harris feels
that these shocking figures could
be reduced if drivers would take
it easy.
He gives a few rules. Start the
trip when rested; keep plenty of
fresh air in the car; make those
coffee stops; engage in light con
versations with the passengers;
and when you begin to doubt
your own judgment let some
body else drive or stop and get

Farm Bureau Urges
Dropping Controls
On Prices, Wages
Washington (U.R) The Amer
ican Farm Bureau Federation
has told Congress that "there
will never be a better time than
now to drop these unworkable
controls" over prices and wages.
It said the "inflation psychol
ogy" has "subsided."
Another major farm group,
the National Grange, urged that
Congress at least prohibit price
controls on farm products which
are not rationed. No farm prod
ucts are rationed now.
May Extend Act
The views were set forth by
the groups' national leaders in
statements prepared for the
House Banking committee. The
committee is considering legis
lation to extend the Defense Pro
duction Act beyond June 30.
Farm Bureau President Allan
B. Kline recommended that Con
gress extend the powers to set
allocations and priorities on ma
terials and to curb consumer
and real estate credit.
Herschel D. Newsom, Grange
Master, also recommended ex
tension of authority to control
credit.
