Methodist Editor Honor Guest Friday Mrs. Clarence A. Meeker was honored at. an informal open house and tea given Friday aft ernoon in the parlori of First Methodist church. Mrs. Meeker, editor of Methodist Woman, na tional publication of the church fnr it women members, made her home in Medford before go ing to New York City to assume editorship of the magazine. Pouring for the tea were Mrs. I. C. Williams, Mrs. W. W. Walker Mrs. Harrv Meyers and Mrs. Lewis Gilliland. Mrs. Mere dith A. Groves took charge of the guest book, and Mrs. Jessie Minear, president, with other members of Woman's Society of Christian Service, greeted guests. Mrs. Meeker, who had come west to attend the general con i.nnn of the church in San Francisco, left Friday night for New York. Methodist Woman now has a circulation of 250,000. Mrs. Merrill Brown and her nephew, Eldon McLaln, Fresno, Calif., are visiting at the home of Mrs. Brown's, sister-in-law, Mrs. Leonard St'enerson, 2216 Jacksonville highway. So 'ee off at Medford Student Represents SOC In Beauty benes Miss Carol Wikstrom, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Al Wik irnm M2 East Main street, Medford, was selected to repre sent Southern Oregon college in the "Beauty on the Campus" series sponsored by the Port land Oregonian. ' Students were selected for their personality and outstand ing qualities. Miss Wikstrom's picture was carried in the Ore gonian's magazine section April 27. A freshman majoring in secre tarial science, Miss Wikstrom has been a popular member of the first-year class. Shortly aft er arriving on the campus at SOC, Miss Wikstrom was elected nerretarv nf her class and was soon active in several college groups. She is secretarial service com mittee chairman of the Future Business" Leaders of America ehih was recentlv elected secre tary of Associated Women Stu dents, is a member of the col lege choir and Raiderette drill squad. Miss Wikstrom was runner-up in a recent contest to choose Queen of Hearts for the annual winter formal dance. She has hpttor-than-averaee grades and does secretarial work in a local business office during vacation. Miss Wikstrom attended Med ford High school and was gradu ated with the class of 1951. Another of the voune women selected for the campus beauty series, Miss Ann Thorniley, was born in Medford. Miss Thornl- ia lppted to represent Lin- field college, is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Thorniley of Ontario, Calif., who moved to that city In 1946 from Med ford. Miss Thorniley, a junior, is majoring in art. Annual Recital Held Tuesday at Church; Three Daughters Play Pupils of Mrs. D. F. Huson, piano teacher, were presented in an annual spring recital in First Presbyterian church parlors Tuesday, May 6. For the first time the three Huson daughters appeared in a recital given by their mother. They were Laura Mae, Margaret, and D a r e 1 y n Huson. Other students presented were Sandra Jewett, Laurie Beth I Buonocore, Sandra Batees, Mary Frohnmayer, Jon Jensen; Phyl lis Tompkins, Lois S t e d m a n, Michael Florey, John Norris, Linda Norris, Shirley Hopkins, Karen Culbertson, Janet Mer rill. Melody Pierce, John Holmes, Douglas Pruitt, Carol Anne Lewis, Dianna Getchell Miss Muriel Cartwright, accom panied by Miss Margaret Huson; Jean Wilcox, Steven Sanders, Jim Perry, Sue Donna Doolen, and Ann Denman. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Huson. Assisting her were Mesdames Kenneth Denman, Bayard Getchell, Tom Culbert son, Aubrey Norris, Horace Doo len, Lawrence Buonocore, James Hapkins and Lloyd Sanders. The serving table was deco rated with iris which matched the color of the punch. .White tapers also were used. For the recital the piano was placed in the center of the room and two large candelabra were used at either side. About 130 persons attended. Reno RiteTWed Medford Couple Mrs. Marie M. Northey and Kenneth A. Northey were Wed In rites May 3 in the Washoe County courthouse, Reno, Nev. The ceremony was performed by Judge Harold O. Taber at 9:30 o'clock in the morning. Mrs. Northey wore a ballerina length dress of coral nylon. Her flowers were white carnations. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N. J. Milkowskl, Sams Val ley, and she Is employed in the business offices of the Medford Mail Tribune. Mr. Northey is employed by the Van Horn Logging company. He was selected to attend the event on the basis of his talent and interest, according to I. A. Mirick, band director. Miss Wikstrom is a freshman in secretarial science at the college, (Brainerd photo) Miss Phyllis Corliss Praised by Critics After Recent Concert Miss Phyllis Corliss, Medford voice student attending Maryl hurst college, received much fa vorable comment on her singing in a recent concert sponsored by the college, it is reported. Miss Corliss, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Corliss, 938 South Holly street, was one of two sopranos featured on the pro gram. The Portland Oregonian re port of the concert praised Miss Corliss for her singing of a group of French art songs, say ing they were performed with "a delicacy of style and almost flawless diction." An instru mental ensemble accompanied Miss Corliss in a Haydn aria. "On Mighty Pens" from "Crea tion" and it was in this that the potentialities of Miss Corliss' lyric voice 'was best realized, the critic pointed out. The program opened with a duet, "Stabat Mater," Pergolesi, by Miss Corliss and Miss Jean Lawson, the second featured so prano and of this it was said "the tonal' blend gave Immedi ate testimony to the seriousness of the two young singers." Mrs. Corliss was in Oregon City for the recital, held at St. John's auditorium. Former Resident Wed Last Month In Church Service . News was received last week of the marriage April 22 at De troit Lakes, Minn., of Mrs. Isa bell C. Newburn to Redmond J, Comerford, of Barstow, Calif, The bride lived in Medford for about two years until leaving here a few months ago. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Emery Trahan, Detroit Lakes The bridegroom is the son of Frank J. Comerford, Boston. The marriage was performed at 9 o'clock in the morning at Holy Rosary church. Easter lilies decorated the altar. For her marriage the bride wore a rose colored suit with orchid accessories. Her corsage was of orchids. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Eidenschink, Detroit Lakes, brother-in-law and sister of the bride, were the attendants. A wedding breakfast was serv ed at the Graystone hotel at tended by 21 members of the immediate family. , The bride is a graduate of the Detroit Lakes high school. She was employed in Medford at the Jackson County Welfare offices. The bridegroom Is stationed with the Marine corps at Bar stow. The' couple made a brief wedding trip to Winnipeg, Man., Can. They now are living at Barstow. for girls sponsored by the Re bekah lodge and Mt. Pitt Re bekah lodge will sponsor this new chapter. Other officers are Judy Van Horn, chaplain; Mary Hcberling, warden; Deanna Lowry, conduc tor; Barbara Thomason, mar shal; Barbara Swanson, right support to president; Freida Cur tis, left support to president; Dorothy Johnson, Inside guar dian; Dorinda Glenn, outside guardian: Ethel Bresland, right support to vice president; and Darlene Williams, left support to vice president. Mrs. John Rock will serve as advisor and Mrs. Forest Thoma son, assistant advisor. Mrs. Ern est Lowry, Mrs. Delbert Mon gold and Mrs. Ralph Burkhart are on the board of control. Following initiation of new Theta Rho girls, the -new club was instituted by Theta chapter, Klamath Falls, under direction of Mrs. Fred J. Herman, Rose burg, chairman of Theta Rho board of control for Oregon. Ac companying the girls from Klam ath Falls were Mrs. Pearl Talley ' and Mrs. Margaret Thurman. Miss Marion Gil lette, Roseburg, as chaplain, as sisted -with the installation as did Mrs. Harry Barker, Suther land, as installing marshal. Mrs. Robert J. Pfaff and Mrs. Ernest Lowry served as installing re cording secretary and musician. Miss Jean Miller of Crater high school sang two numbers, ac companied by Mrs. Lowry. Re freshments were served from a table centered with tulips. Beta Chi club was presented a white Bible from the Klamath Falls chapter, a gift of $25 from Central Point Oddfellows lodge, a. redwood offering plate from Mrs. Herman and club badges from the FL club.
