TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday, May 9, 1952 Tribune Cheney Studs Oppose Raiders Here Sunday The Medford Cheney Studs meet the Southern Oregon Col lege nine at the fairgrounds this Sunday at 2 in the afternoon in their only home appearance be fore league action starts on May 17. The Studs and SOC were rained out In their previous scheduled game last Wednesday night but the weather man promises a sunny day for Sun day so all Medford baseball fans can witness their first semi pro baseball game of the sea son here. Southern Oregon has won four and lost seven o far this Dodgers Warned To Show More Respect to Umps New York (U.R) Dodger Manager Charley Dressen dis closed Friday that he has been ordered by National League President Warren Giles to warn the Dodger players to "show more respect to the umpires." Dressen said that the order, contained In a personal note from Giles to the Dodger man ager, was the outgrowth of the Dodgers' "riding" of Umpire Frank Dascoll during the game against the Cincinnati Reds in Cincinnati Tuesday. Giles' note contained the warning to Dressen: "If you and your coaches are unable to con trol the players, the league will." Giles Preient Giles, whose headquarters are In Cincinnati, was present at the game and sat In a box seat near, the Dodger dugout. In the note, Giles said that he heard the Dodgers calling Dascoll abusive names. "Jackie Robinson was partic ularly offensive," sold Giles. Robinson was the only player mentioned In the note Both Dressen and Robinson denied heatedly that the Dodg ers' stnr second baseman called Dascoll names. . "Jackie is a good bench jock ey, but he doesn't call people names, said Dressen. Gridder Charges Fans Also Guilty Milwaukee (U.R) Quarter back Don Leahy, the nation's number two forward passer last year, says that fans and overly- zealous alumni are partially re sponsible for the overemphasis nf football. Leahy, who completed 127 of 232 passes including 12 that went for touchdowns for Mar quelle unlverstiy last season, has written an article In hia college magazine In which he said that "every single Individual who cries for the scalp of the coach with a losing record Is Just as guilty o'f overemphasis as are those In charge of questionable athletic programs. The club was won two and lost four in league action, splitting its re cent series with Cal Aggies and Chico State. The Studs nicked the Raiders 8 to 7 two weeks ago. Siartera Told Coach Ted Schopf may start Don Jacobson on the mound for the ' Raiders, but Jerry or Jim Hennebeck could get the call. Clarence Mellbye or Bob Nel son will open for the Studs. Manager "Hoosier" Hoffard of the Studs expects his boys to come through in better style this Sunday as his club has had two weeks more seasoning. Hof fard states he needs one more good man to balance his Infield but feels this will be filled when the college season has been com pleted. Indications point to a successful season for the Studs, Hoffard feels. Hope for Support The Stud management hopes that the fans will turn out to support the club this season at the gate. As a semi-pro organ ization the Studs will play fewer games than the prog have here in the past few years but the baseball fans will still have enough games to satisfy their desires. It Is felt the brand of baseball will justify the fans support. The only promotion plan the Stud management will use this season will be a ticket drive for the opening series with Drain on May 17 and 18. This ticket sale will be handled along the same line that the Medford Rogues used last season. This is only to insure a large crowd for the opening series and to make Medford again one of the lead ing bnseball cities of the state, it was said. Rogue Valley base ball is conducting the drive. Squaw Lake Fishing Good Portland (U.R) Week-end anglers should have good luck in most of Oregon except along the coastal strip and In north western section of the state, the Oregon State Game commission reported Friday. The fishing report by regions Included: Southwest: Fishing is good In all south coastal streams and lakes. Salmon fishing In lower Rogue river hos been good. Trout fishing is poor in upper and middle sections of Rogue and only fair In tributaries. Squaw lake is good to excel lent. Salmon fishing is poor but Improving in the Grants Pass to Galice area. Trout and salmon angling on the Umpqua river is fair. And Oak land Manager Mel Ott, who used to hit home runs for the New York Giants, knows that as well as any diamond figure. Ott's Oaks started Thursday night's game against Los Angel es in a breezy way. It looked like a high-scoring contest after squat Acorn Eddie Lake pickled a 3-2 pitch for a first-inning grand-slam home run. Lake's poke featured a five-run. rally and apparently ermoved all sem blance of competition fr6m the game. Getlel Hit Freely But Los Angeles, hitting free ly at Oakland starter, Allen Gettel, tied it at 6-6 In the sixth inning. Only two double-play throws to the plate from weak-, armed rightfielder Loyd Christ opher kept the Oaks in the game. Then, after Angel pitcher Cal McLish doubled himself Into a 7-6 lead In the eighth, Oakland tied It on Pete Milne's single and won it when Ott engineered a . successful squeeze. Hank Schenz did the bunting and Jay Ragnl did the running. The final score was 8-7. Duden Nabs Oregon Open Portland (U.R) Bob Dndcn, a touring pro from Portland, won an 18-hnle playoff from Tacoma's Chuck Congdon Thursday to win the Oregon Open golf crown. Duden hit par on the outgoing nine at the Riverside Golf and Country club course here to gain a fivc-slroke lead. Congdon tired birdies on 10, 11 and 15 to cut Duden's lead to two strokes. Red Raiders, Lumberjacks To Scuffle Ashland A full program of athletic events is scheduled at Southern Oregon college Satur day, all with teams from Hum boldt State college. The baseball squads of the two schools will square off for a double-header at 1 in the after noon, according to Coach Ted Schopf. The Red Raiders split with the Lumberjacks In a re cent series played at Areata. The game will be played on Fuller field. Trackciars Via At 1:30 the track teams will meet at the Ashland high school field Southern Oregon finished ahead of the Loggers at Chico last week in a triangular meet but Coach Dan Bulkley says the dual competition may see dif ferent results.
