(neentationaJJ Portland Bakers Quit in Protest To Sunday Work Portland (U.R) Portland was added Monday to the list of Pa cific Northwest cities in the grip of a baker's strike as 650 worn ers walked off the job in 27 plants here. Some restaurants began cut ting down on amount of bread served but no serious shortage was expected Immediately. Many small neighborhood bakeries were not affected and large stocks of bread were placed in cold storage last week in antic! pation of the strike. Late Talks Fail The strike was voted by the union Saturday after last minute talks failed to produce an agree ment. They agreed, however, to continue negotiations during the strike. The Portland strike fol lowed walkouts in Seattle, Spo kane, Tocoma and Lewiston, Ida Main issue is the Sunday shift The union seeks an end to week end work but employers suy bread has to be baked on Sun' days for the Monday trade. Meat. Cutters Plan To Seek Wage Boost Chicago (U.R) The AFL Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butchor . Workmen of North America planned Monday to seek an unspecified wage boost from the packinghouse industry. Contracts covering some 125,- 000 AFL workers expire August 11. Union officials said they would also ask a union shop. non-contributory health and wel fare plan, unproved pensions and other benefits. Similar demands are expected to be made by the CIO United Packinghouse Workers, repre sentlng 120,000 employees, in negotiations before its major con tracts expire August 11.
