added Monday to the list of Pa
cific Northwest cities in the grip
of a baker's strike as 650 worn
ers walked off the job in 27
plants here.
Some restaurants began cut
ting down on amount of bread
served but no serious shortage
was expected Immediately. Many
small neighborhood bakeries
were not affected and large
stocks of bread were placed in
cold storage last week in antic!
pation of the strike.
Late Talks Fail
The strike was voted by the
union Saturday after last minute
talks failed to produce an agree
ment. They agreed, however, to
continue negotiations during the
strike. The Portland strike fol
lowed walkouts in Seattle, Spo
kane, Tocoma and Lewiston, Ida
