HILL GAIL TRIUMPHS IN KENTUCKY DERBY Louisville, Ky. (U.R) Calu met Farm's Hill Gail, a barrel chested beauty from the Blue Grass with lasting speed to burn, roared to a record-smashing tri umph in the 78th Kentucky Derby Saturday as 110,000 frenzied fans cheered his dash Into the turf's hall of fame. Off on top in his bid to re write the record books, the dark bay son of Bull Lea took the lead as they left the gate, relinquished It and then under the urging of little Eddie Arcaro blasted out MOVING? It was a day for the books, under a perfect blue sky and over a lightning fast track, as the Calumet colt covered the mile and a quarter distance in 2:01 3-5 seconds, just one-fifth of a second off the track record hung up by his stablemate, Whirlaway in 1841. Sth For Calumat For this was a record fifth win for Calumet as Hill Gail, who returned $4.20, $4.00 and $3.20, pounded down that final, stretch of light tan track, and it meant that he had beaten the bugaboo which bested a great stable of a former era that of Col. E. R. Bradley. And there were two other records at stake as, six lengths on top when they turned for home, he started racing through the tunnel of screams. It seemed a question of whether he might be caught by the onrushing Sub Fleet. But Hill Gail hung gamely on, with Arcaro flailing away up there on his neck, to finish two lengths on top. Medford won the first fracas 9 to 6 and lost the other to the Pels 3 to 2. The first encounter was a regular district scuffle, completing the four-game con ference slate, while the second was a five-inning king's-x affair. The Tornado hopped to a quick lead with four runs in the first inning on a double by Ned Lan ders, single by Ted Landers, three bases on balls and a wild Miles Doran Golf Champ Miles Doran won the men's spring golf handicap at Rogue Valley Country club Saturday by defeating young Phil Getchell 3 and 1. Doran held a 1 up lead after nine holes but Getchell had evened the match by the 14th. Then Doran parred the next three holes, finishing strong, to take the title. Under the handicap arrange ment, Getchell would have had to birdie the holes to keep in the scrap. ' Trout Available At Twin Ponds Trout fishing is now available at Twin Ponds, operated by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Humphrey 2V4 miles up Butte Falls road from Crater Lake highway. A lake has been stocked with eight and 10 inch trout, the pro prietors reported. Bass, crappies, catfish and blue gills also may be caught at Twin Ponds. The Humphreys said that Roy Forester, Jackson ville and Paul LeClaire, Eagle Point, recently caught 15 bassjn 2V4 hours. The fish averaged bit ter than two pounds. San Francisco Downs San Diego Nine, 4-0 San Diego, Calif. U.R) Southpaw Al Lien stopped the Pacific Coast league leading San Diego Padres 4 to 0 today to give San Francisco its first victory in a S-game series with San Diego. Lien, who went the entire dis tance, held the Padres to six hits to take his second win of the year and break a four-straight losing streak of the San Fran ciscans. The Seals opened their offen sive in the fifth frame when An thony Tornay doubled and was singled home on Len Ratio's single. DUCKS WIN ON LINKS Eugene (U.R) University of Oregon's golf team trounced Washington State college, 23 Vi to 3Vi, here Friday in a North ern division dual match. Medal ist was Oregon's Fred Mueller who shot a three-under-par 69 on the Eugene Country club course. GETS NEW POST Myrtle Point Norm Yorke has been appointed head foot ball coach at Myrtle Point high school. He served as grid coach at Illinois Valley high school, Cave Junction, last fall. Yorke was a member of the University of Oregon Cotton Bowl squad of 1949. The Pels caught up at 6 to 6 in the fourth frame on singles by Owings and Lundsten, three walks, a wild pitch and a stolen base. Terry Maddox was called to replace Lloyd Hart on the mound for Medford. With wo runs in, the bases loaded and two men out, Maddox fanned Dexter to retire the side. No Klamathite got on base in the next three innings. Cook Triplet Medford scored two In the fifth on sigles by Maddox, Woo ton and Dale Cook, twoi stolen bases, a walk and a hit batter. The ninth run came in the sev enth inning on Curt Holzgang's single and Cook's triple. In the finale Medford got two first-inning runs on a walk, Ned Landers' triple and a groundout. Klamath Falls got all its runs in the fourth. Owings and Floc chini singled and a hit batter and error aided the cause. The defeat was Medford's sec ond of the season. REDWOOD FENCE COMPANY Five Dodgers Among Loop Bat Leaders New York (U.R) The Brooklyn Dodgers' fast start in the National League race this season can be attributed to their re-found batting power, official statistics have revealed. Five members of the Dodgers' "hit parade" are found in the National League's leading hit ters, including Jackie Robinson, who took over the league leader ship during the past week. Robinson had boasted 14 hits in 33 times at bat, including afternoon games of Thursday, May 1. That gave the slugging second baseman an average of .412. But Robinson wasn't doing all the hitting for the Flatbush crew. Third baseman Billy Cox was winging along with a .377 average, right fielder Carl Furil lo had a .366 mark, catcher Roy Campanclla was hitting .349 and center fielder Duke Snider rounded out the league's "big 10" with a .340 mark. Rookie Toby Atwcll of the Chicago Cubs was Robinson's closest rival with an impressive .387 average, while teammate Frankie Baumholtz was close behind at .386. Other leading hitters were Walker Cooper of the Braves, .378: Ted Kluszewski of the Reds, .370, and Red Scho endienst of the Cardinals, last week's leader, .340. In the American League, out fielder Edmer Valo of Jhe Phila delphia Athletics was the sur prise leader with 16 hits in 39 appearances for a .410 average. Gerry Coleman left the New York Yankees for the Marine Corps with a .405 average, while Floyd Baker of the Washington Senators, Pat Mullin of Detroit and Ed Stewart of the Chicago White Sox tied for third at .385. Rounding out the American League's top 10 were Frank Campos of the Senators, .381. Hector Rodriguex of the White Sox, 375; Vern Stephens of the Red Sox, .355; Marty Marion of the Browns and Al Rosen of the Indians, both .348. Bob Cain of the St. Louis Browns was the American League's best pitcher with a record of three victories in his first three starts. Gerry Staley of the Cardinals topped the Na tional League hurlers with a 4-0 record. Sunday, May 4, 1151 MEDFORD (OREGON) MATL TRIBUNE THREE Engineers Report Good Fish Luck At Dorena Dam Portland (U.R) In an effort to put a damper on reports that flood control reservoirs aren't good for fish life, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported Sat urday that more than 1,000 fish ermen are having good luck ev ery weekend at Dorena dam, 22 miles southeast of Eugene, Ore. The Engineers report that the average trout caught measures between 10 and 14 Inches long and weighs about a pound. It say that limit catches are the rule rather than the exception. 1950 Stock The Oregon Game Commis sion reports that the rainbow trout being caught In the lake formed by damming the Row river ore part of the stock of 200,155 two to four-inch class rainbows planted in the reservoir in 1950. The commission first poisoned the water in the reser voir to kill off existing "trash fish before the game fish were planted. The lake has an 18-mile short line and the engineers report that the average weekend will see 50 boats on the water and the dam-tender at Dorena reports between 750 and 800 automo biles are accommodated on Sat urdays and Sundays, most of them from the Eugene area. Bevos Edge Oaks In 16 Innings Oakland, Calif. U.R) Her man Reich, who grounded into a triple play In the 12th inning, drove home Portland's winning run In the 16th Saturday as the Bevos measured Oakland, 7-6, before 3,308 fans. The wild, four hour and 21 minute contest called on the services of 11 pitchers. Portland picked up 15 hits, tabbing the loss on rookie Charley Oubre, who took over in the 16th.
