It was prettier than those Las Vegas explosions, too. Hollywood's secret weapon was movie magic for producer George Pals "War of the Worlds.'" The plot of this science fiction epic, a refurbished ver sion of H. G. Wells' 1898 classic, was earthlings throwing an atom bomb at invading Martians. While the Atomic Energy com mission was busy popping off bombs in Las Vcgns, (he speclnl effects wizards at Paramount were exploding their work of art, too. Reporters In Nevada had to wear special eye coverings, but I got by wilh the regulation Holly wood sun glasses. Hollywood's first land atom bomb was built by the studio ex plosives expert, two-lime Osenr winner Walter Hoffman. He stashed flash powder, which doesn't make much noise or blast. "The smoke gets that mush room effect when it reaches the cold air at the celling." Hoffman explained. "We have dry Ice up there. "We tried shooting this out doors, but the smoke's so thin the breeze blows It away." MGM special effects men strug gled for six months to make an atom bomb for "The Beginning or the End." But that was a wa ter bomb, so the 81-year-old Hoffman had to concoct the land bomb recipe from scratch. First he looked at the Lns Vegas atom ic explosion on television. Not for Pictures "Ehh, it was okay, but It wasn't for pictures," he shrug Red. "Mine is more effective. I made it bluish-green. That'll look great against white smoke." Monogram Studios plans a mo vie that will show an atom bomb, too and presumably theirs will be a B-bomb. ves SIO mv FRIEAIO WHtN YDO USC A pmsutiDCARrpoM tWfRTON M0T0K. CO. That's their opinion, and I'm sure they are as sincere about it as I am about mine. If they didn't believe tonsillectomy Is beneficial In most Instances they would not advise or do the op eration. I don't know how familiar these colleagues may be with the statistics reported in various medical Journals and tabulated in Children's Tonsils In and Out (Lippinco.U by Albert D. Kaiser. M. D., but to my mind Dr. Kai ser's observations of the efforts of tonsillectomy on Rochester school children do not warrant the opinion that tonsillectomy is uniformly beneficial, although I must say that Dr. Kaiser himself concluded that in some respects children whose tonsils were re moved were better off than chil dren whose tonsils were not re moved. Ten or twelve years ago Public Health Reports estimated that there were 1,235.000 tonsillec tomies a year in the United States. Probably not nearly so many now. Doctors are less radical about the tonsils today. In Archieves of Otolaryngol ogy Drs. Hansel and Chang esti mated that 160,000 of the more than a million and a quarter of patients subjected to tonsillec tomy in a year were unneces sarily operated on.
