April 29, 1952 MEDFORDvJ-TRIBUNB Simmons Slated To Pitch First Game in 19 Months rh:nnnn II PI Curt Simmons the strong-armed southpaw who! won 17 games for the National league pennant winners, Phila delphia, In 1950, will. make his first start in 19 months Tuesday and if he's right, then the Phil lies will be. a strong threat to repeat as champions "If he comes through It will be a definite boost to our ball club," manager Eddie Sawyer said. "He's looked all right In workouts and it looks like every thing has worked out fine, but he's been away a long time. "We need left handed pitching bad, and if he's right, it'll be a big help." Simmons, who left the Phillies in August, 19S0, with his Na tional Guard division went into federal service, said he'd "give it a try." "I guess I'm going to go Tues day," lie said. "They told me I would. I've been with the club since the 12th of April and work ed out as much as I could. So I'll give it a try now. Simmons was a hurling whirl wind for the National league Softball Session Again Thursday A second meeting for revival of the Mcdford Softball associ ation has been set for 8 p.m. Thursday at the Medford YMCA. All persons interested In play ing or in sponsoring teams are invited. This Includes Individu als and groups in Medford and in communities putside of Med ford. There are prospective league entries already from Eagle Point and Ashland. The YMCA is serving as a clearing house. County B Schools Set '52 Track Championship Jackson County B league high schools will hold their 1952 track and field championships Friday, May 2, it was announced today. The event is scncnuiua for 2:30 p.m. at the Medford .nnlnr Vllttll Kfhnnl tmck. Four teams are expected to enter full teams in the meet. They are Jacksonville, Rogue River, Phoenix and Talent. Com petitors from St. Mary's of Med ford, BuWo Falls and Prospect will also take part. L&C Only Undefeated NWC Team By UNITED PRESS Idle Lewis & Clark kept the only undefeated slate in the Northwest conference baseball chase Tuesday as Linficld got a split with College of Idaho and Whitman swept a doublcheader with Willamette. Linfield clubbed College of Idaho, 19-7 in their opener at Caldwell, taking advantage of 11 hits and 11 Coyote errors, but in the nightcap, the Idahoans came from behind in the seventh inning to win, 9-8. Whitman's twin triumphs over Willamette at Walla Walla were credited to Sid Aronson, sopho more pitcher. He came into the first game after the regulation nine innings and pitched through the 10th as his mates delivered a 2-1 victory. Then in the second game, Aronson came in as a reliefer in the third to hold Willamette scoreless for the remainder of the contest and an 8-6 victory. Grade Meet Wednesday Medford senior high school will be host starting at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday for a county grade school invitational meet. Invitations have been sent to eight non-high school district schools. They are Shady Cove, Lone Pine, Eagle-Trail, Howard, Oak Grove, Griffin Creek, West Side and Evans Valley. Boys will compete in seventh and eighth grade classes. Events' will be 60, 100 and 220-yard dashes, 440-yard run, 440 relay, baseball throw, pole vault, high jump, broad jump, and shot put. Schools are being limited to two boys in the races, except the relay, in which one team may be entered, and three boys in the other events. Oregon Ducks Strengthen Lead With Victory Over Washington By United Preii The University of Oregon con tinued to pace the Northern Di vision baseball race Tuesday after Sophomore Don Siegmund pitched the Ducks to a 5-1 vic tory over the Washington Huskies. The other game Monday saw Washington State edge Idaho, 1-0. as Cougar luirlcr Hod Keogh and Harlan Melton of Idaho went the distance in a 10-inning duel. Oregon opened the scoring In the second inning with two runs on a pair of singles and a double by Nick Schmer. The ducks added a solo tally in the fifth and two in the seventh. Washington's only run came In the ninth on singles by Sam Mitchell, Bob Houbregs and Gordy Rndland. The rally was cut short by a fast double play. Washington State's victory came when Vandal rightfielder H. A. Butler booted a Texas leaguer to allow Cougar second baseman Glenn Krone to score from second. Matthews Defeats Kaplan in First San Francisco (U.R) Ring ob servers forecast a June match with heavyweight contender Rocky Marciano for Harry (Kid) Matthews, on the basis of his first round knockout of Georgie Kaplan, New York. Matthews sent Kaplan to the canvas In 1 minute and 18 sec onds of their scheduled 10-round bout which was Monday night's main event at Winterland auditorium. Kaplan was knocked down in the first 40 seconds by a left to the chin. He took" a count of eight on one knee. Kaplan failed to land a single solid pimch against his lighter opponent. All-American Spivey Faces Arrest on Perjury Charges New York (U.R) Seven-foot Bill Spivey, the University of Kentucky's former All-America basketball center, faced arrest Tuesday on charges of perjury arising out of the "fixing" scan dal. Spivey, who stoutly maintains his innocence of any implication in "shaving points" in any games, was indicted here late Monday night and accused of testifying falsely when he told a New York County grand jury on Feb. 27 that he never had accepted money to "fix"- a game. Earlier Monday, Spivey had been accused of taking bribes to fix three games, including a game against St. Louis in the Sugar Bowl tournament at New Orleans, Dec. 29, 1950. It was not on the charge of Knockout Artists Set Fight in Milwaukee Milwaukee U.R) Two knockout artists, Dan Bucceroni of Philadelphia and Aaron Wil son of Knoxville, Tenn., square off at the Milwaukee Auditori um Tuesday night in a bout that is not expected to go the dis tance. Both Bucceroni, the nation's fifth-ranking light-heavyweight, and Wilson, a protege of Mid dleweight Champion Sugar Ray Robinson, have won more than half of their professional fights by kayocs. A fugitive warrant was issued for his arrest and was forwarded to Police Chief Walter Franklin of Fayette County, Kentucky. Four-Man Trade Slated by Browns Cleveland, Ohio (U.R) The Cleveland Browns have announc ed a three-for-one trade with the Green Bay Packers, sending vet eran tackle Chubby Grigg and two rookies to the northerners in return for linebacker Walt Michaels. The re-acquisition of the 23-year-old Michaels, dubbed the "Big Train" at Washington & Lee, should fill the Browns' de fensive vacuum caused by the anticipated retirement of Tony Ariamle to study medicine. He was traded by Cleveland to the Packers before the season began last year. Lee Jouglard of Detroit, who set the all-time singles record of 775 at St. Paul in 1951, rolled a meager 637 Monday. When it came to the other events he was even in worse form. In the team event he rolled 577 then took a mere 521 in the doubles. About 4,500 fans were on hand to see Vancouver open its home season by downing the Yakima Bears, 8-1. Yakima scored its lone run in the first inning on Bill Andring's triple and Charles Malmberg's single. But the Capilanos roared back in their half of the inning to tie the score on a walk and a triple by Len Tran, who was obtained only a few hours before from Seattle of the Pacific Coast league.
