- .... ; - ' BATTLE LOST TO MISSOURI-Main buildings uf Sherman Air Force base near Leavenworth, Kans., lie deep in water after the Missouri River broke through newly raised dikes. More than 1600 . men fought a nine-day battle against the river but lost to the record crest. Damage to the $3,500,000 base is estimated at $1,000,000. Almost all equipment was removed from buildings during the fight to strengthen the dikes. Prison Executions . Decline in 1950 to Lowest in 20 Years Washington U.R) Fewer per sons were executed in 1950 than in any of 20 previous years, ac cording to director James V, Bennett of the Federal Prisons Bureau. He issued a statistical report which showed that only 82 were put to death for murder, rape. and other crimes in laoO, con trasted with a 20-year average of 147 yearly for the period 1930 Electrical Co-op Meeting Draws 350 About 350 persons attended the first ol a series of mass meetings being held by the Twin Counties Electrical cooperative, at the Sams Valley Grange hall last night. Next such meeting will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Joseph- lne county courthouse in Grants Pass, it was announced. George Loftin, president of the recently-formed cooperative, presided at last night's meeting, and introduced Frederick Miller, field representative of the Rural Electrification administration of the Department of Agriculture, who explained the terms under which the federal government will assist electric cooperatives in setting up power service to rural areas. The assistance included long term, low interest loans, he ex plained, as well as technical aid. A number of applications for electric service and membership In the cooperatives were made at the meeting. Phoenix City Court Cases Told by Chief Phoenix City court cases at at Phoenix for last week and this are as follows, according to police Chief Marvin C. Fisher: Dennis L. Dawson, violation of basic rule, $5 fine suspended. LeRoy M. Keeney, violation of basic rule, S5. Donald L. Whitmore, failure to stop at stop sign, $5 fine sus pended. Paul N. Allen, violation of ba sic rule, $5. William A. Schroeder, viola tion of basic rule and failure to yield right-of-way, $10 with $5 fine suspended. John Hassenzahl, parked wrong way on street, S2.50. A total of 119 were executed in 1949, while the high year since 1930 was 1935 when 199 were put to death. Military Excluded The figures did not include executions carried out by mili tary authorities. During the years 1930 to 1950, the Army, includ ing the Air Force, executed 148. All were in the period 1942 through 1950, and included 95 for murder, 52 for rape, and one for desertion. There was none by the Navy. Murder Leads Aside from the military, the 21-year period of 1930 through 1950 was marked by 3,029 execu tions by federal and state authori ties. Murder was - involved in 2,645, or 87.3 per cent; rape, 335, or 11.1 per cent; and 49, or 1.6 per cent for other offenses. The other offenses included 17 for armed robbery; 12 for kid naping; 10 for burglary; six for espionage; three for aggravated assault, and one for an unclassi fied crime. Only 21 of those, executed were women. All were put to death for murder. And of the" total, 44.8 per cent were whites, 54 per cent Negroes, and the rest of other races.
