One must not be misled by the circumstance that such symptoms last long enough to permit a dose or two of this or that laxative, salts, stomach sedative or coal-tar sense dead ener to "work." It is quite in order that this lnr notion of biliousness persists. It was popular with doc tors in the good old horse ana buggy days. An authoritative textbook of therapeutics pub lished in 1904 has no less than 14 medicinal remedies and three remedial measures other than medicinal for "biliousness." Give any normal or healthy person an emetic and It Is likely that if vomiting continues after Some of the functions of the liver are (1) formation of urea and uric acid, (2) detoxication, (3) secretion of bile, (4) pro duction of fi b r 1 no gen, which is nec essary for nor mal clotting of blood, (5) stor age of iron and copper, (6) pro duction of he parin, which prevents for this substance. mation of clot obtained from beef liver, is used nowadays in the treatment of thrombosis. The liver has several other functions which are prin cipally of scientific Interest. The liver secretes from one to two pints of bile daily. The bile is an orange-red liquid, turning to greenish-brown on exposure to air. It contains the salts, sod ium glycocholate and sodium taurocholate, which play a part in the emulsiflcation and diges tion of fata in the intestine; bile pigments, derived from the hemoglobin (coloring matter) of red blood corpuscles which have grown old in service and met their fate destruction in the spleen; and cholesterol, a fatlike substance which is of special interest because It is present in greater or less amount in gall stones. Some popular notions about the bile or gall are purely imag inary There is no foundation In fact for the notion of "bilious ness" as an illness or indisposi tion or a cause of languor, head ache, . perhaps dizziness, some yellowing of the skin and lining of eyelids and covering of eye balls and a vague general mal aise or mental depression and sanity hearing for her. Mrs. Kader's trial is expected to be held late next month. Judge Oppenheimer ruled against the state's motion for a sanity hearing after Mrs. Kadar's attorney, Frank Pozzl, said he was "unaltera'c lv opposed" to having her subjected to a mental examination. Pozzi argued there is no evidence to show she was Incompetent.
