day' that the "Big Shot" atomic
blast in Nevada melted the
desert sands over a radius of
BOO yards from Ground Zero.
They said the heat generated
by the test explosion Tuesday
was so intense that sagebrush
was set afire three miles away
from the point directly under
the bursting A-bomb, or Ground
Zero.
Rep. Melvln Price (D.-Ill.), a
member of the joint congression
al Atomic Committee and one of
five House members who watch
ed the Yucca Flat explosion from
a neck-high trench three and a
half miles from the target, said
one building believed In a "safe"
zone was burned to the ground.
He estimated It was more than
two milps from Ground Zero.
Rep. Olin E. Teague (D.-Tex.),
said the same blast here "would
practically have burned Wash
ington to the ground."

said Thursday he would begin
immediately the preliminary
proceedings of his $2,000,000
libel-slander suit against Sen.
William Benton (D.-Conn.),
McCarthy told newsmen he
would take advantage of his
legal privileges and subpeona

appear at a pre-trial examination
to clear up as many issues as
possible before the case goes be
fore a judge.
He said he would consult with
Benton's attorney's before set
ting a date for this interrogation.
McCarthy filed his suit last
month. In his complaint, he
