MEDFORDTRIBUlrt Saigh Indicted On Income Tax Evasion Charges St. Louis (U.R) Fred F. Saigh Jr., president of the St. Louis Cardinals, said Wednesday he "cannot understand" why a fed eral grand Jury indicted him on five charges of Income tax evasion. Saigh, a 47-year-old lawyer who made a quick fortune in real estate deals prior to buying con trol of the National league club in 1949, was charged with evad ing taxes on personal and corpo rate income of $108,823. The first two counts of the In dictment charged him with sign ing false returns on personal in come and failing to pay taxes of $13,262 In 1946 and $14,351 in 1947. The third count accuses Saigh, as vice-president of the Cardi nals, of falsely listing corporate Income of $1,440,497 in 1948 in stead of the true figure of $1 463,275 and of paying $8,655 less taxes than the baseball club owed. The fourth and fifth cout.ts said that Saigh filed joint re turns on his home and his wife's personal income for the years 1948 and 1949, and debated the correctness of the tax payments he made lor those years $8,604 In 1948 and $4,748 in 1949.
